What are the responsibilities and job description for the Survey Instrument Operator position at GCW Engineering, Inc.?
Summary
Works as part of a field survey team under the direction of the Party Chief. Must know how to read construction plans, topographical maps, and final maps.
Essential Duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Operates survey instruments required to perform surveys as directed by the Party Chief including providing the proper care and cleaning of all instruments and equipment.
- Ensures all survey materials and equipment are clean, charged and in good working condition, and adequately stowed and loaded onto the survey truck each day.
- Assists in the preparation and verification of mathematical calculations related to surveying and basic engineering; computes distances, bearings traverses and elevations.
- Assists the higher level technicians in project research, securing equipment, using safety techniques, performing the survey operation, handling the equipment, recording data and other associated duties.
- Possesses knowledge of the operation, checking and basic field adjustments on transits, total stations, data collectors, levels, compass, tribrachs, and tripods.
- Assists in keeping neat and orderly field notes for standard surveying operations : leveling, traversing, topographic mapping, layout, as-built surveys, boundary surveys, profile, and cross-section surveys.
- Assists with entry of field data and can produce positional information (i.e., leveling, traversing, topographic mapping) with either a hand-held calculator or micro-computer software.
- Assists Party Chief and other team members as directed.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
This position may or may not have supervisory or oversight responsibilities.
EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE
Must possess a high school diploma or GED and a minimum of one (1) year experience as a Chainperson.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Valid driver’s license and ability to drive company vehicles.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands, stand, walk, crouch, bend, stoop, stretch, and lift. Employee must have specific vision abilities to include close and distance vision, full color vision, and ability to adjust focus working with computer and business equipment. Work may require moderate physical exertion with long periods of sitting or standing; lifting up to 30 lbs
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in a field environment is usually medium to high. All weather conditions exist in a field environment.
