What are the responsibilities and job description for the HFIR Mechanical Designer position at GEM Technology?
Background:
The HBRR (HFIR Beryllium Reflector Replacement) project:
ORNL is preparing to replace HFIR’s permanent beryllium reflector, along with other key reactor core components, to sustain and enhance HFIR’s operational performance. This effort requires the disassembly of the reactor and neutron instruments and will result in a period of extended downtime beginning in 2028.
The HBRR effort includes a approximately 4000 sq.ft. expansion to the existing cold guide hall facility as well as upgrades to the thermal and cold neutron instruments. The effort also includes a reconfiguration and expansion of the neutron guide network and instrument layout within the cold guide hall. Extending this guide hall will allow for reconfiguring and optimizing the facility’s cold neutron instruments to significantly improve their performance, develop new capabilities, and provide space to build new instruments.
As part of the HBRR effort, the instrument beam room (thermal instruments) must be fully disassembled and re-installed in conjunction with the beryllium replacement. This effort includes numerous design activities including new designs and evaluation of existing designs.
As an augmented part of the Design Services staff, this role would support the Instrument Engineering Group in their efforts to reconfigure and optimize the instruments in the beam room and cold guide hall located at HFIR.
Scope:
The scope of this work is to utilize Creo 10 and Windchill to provide both 2D and 3D design support to the Instrument Engineering Group within the NTD, as part of the Design Services Group, in their efforts on reconfiguring and optimizing the instrument suite as part of the HBRR project.
