MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in Sanitary Science, Environmental Health, Public Health, Sanitary Engineering, Physical Science, Chemical Science, Biological Science or related field.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to perform Essential Job Duties and Functions with or without reasonable accommodations.
JOB SUMMARY: Plans, develops, executes and reviews environmental health programs in the following areas: food and food service sanitation, Private/Type 3 and Non-community water supplies, sewage disposal, public swimming pools, campgrounds, school and institution food service sanitation, adult/child foster care, child daycares and body art; works under the supervision of an Environmental Health Supervisor; performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS:
- Reviews plans for proposed food service establishments, engineered on-site sewage disposal and water supplies ensuring adherence to applicable Michigan laws and State Health Codes;
- Inspects all food service establishments, adult/child foster care, child daycare centers, public swimming pools and recreational facilities, campgrounds and body art facilities;
- Reviews plans, issues permits and inspects (Non-community, Private and Type 3) water supplies and sewage disposal systems for homes and small commercial buildings;
- Complaint investigations regarding potential/confirmed foodborne illness outbreaks, water pollution and similar public health nuisances and hazards;
- Provides assistance to affiliated agencies concerning environmental health issues.
ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Knowledge of public health laws;
- Knowledge of water supply and sewage disposal systems;
- Knowledge of pollution/contamination of food, water and other environmental areas;
- Ability to enforce public health laws;
- Ability to perform environmental health investigations and prepare necessary reports;
- Ability to communicate orally and in writing;
- Ability to attend work on a regular basis and to work under stressful conditions;
- Ability to work effectively with the public;
- Ability to work independently, collaboratively and respectfully in a complex, multicultural work environment that values diversity, equity and inclusion.
