Summary of Responsibilities: The Director of Residence Life provides visionary leadership and day-to-day direction for the Residence Life department; administers and manages the student housing program for the College; directs departmental operations; oversees the department budget; sets department goals; coordinates assessment efforts; and establishes learning outcomes and implementation strategies for the department. The incumbent is required to live on campus, in campus-provided housing, to respond to crisis situations in accordance with departmental and institutional emergency procedures.


Essential Responsibilities: (These essential responsibilities are those the individual must be able to perform unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.)

  • Residence Life Duties
    • Manages the College?s housing and residence life operations in the division of student development; provides fiscal management for department budget; supervises professional and graduate assistant staff, ensuring efficient operations and programming, and ensures compliance with all relevant policies, procedures, standards, and laws.
    • Evaluates and assesses College housing occupancy, retention, and projection trends; oversees the residential facilities to maintain a safe, secure, and healthy living environment; confirms that all room assignments and billings are completed and communicated to students.
    • Develops and oversees residential communities that utilize best practices in student development and research to create an engaging co-curricular, living/learning community in the Residence Halls.
    • Ensures the security and safety of students - responsible for crisis and risk management response as delegated
    • Establishes long range planning mechanisms; represents the department and establishes a collaborative relationship with various College departments.
    • Responsible for ensuring that Residence Life staff are adequately trained with proper oversight to ensure that College policies and procedures, laws and regulations are followed and are adhered to.
  • Student Development Duties
    • Participate as an active member of the Student Development director team with positive contributions to team members and keeping the best interest of the Student Development division in mind.
    • Serve as the College?s chief judicial officer.
    • Serve on various College committees as assigned
  • Title IX Investigator
    • Thoroughly and expeditiously, review and investigate complaints of sexual misconduct, sexual harassment, gender-related violence including stalking and intimate partner violence, and protected class discrimination and harassment and related retaliation as assigned. Investigators are expected to conduct a prompt, equitable and impartial administrative investigation into complaints, including explaining the complaint process to appropriate parties; identifying and interviewing parties; identifying, gathering, and assessing information relevant to the investigation; applying relevant policies; making findings of fact in individual cases; writing administrative review reports; and maintaining reports files.
  • Supervision
    • Supervise regular and student employees to include interviewing, hiring, training, planning, assigning/directing work, coaching, evaluating performance, affirming, disciplining, addressing complaints, and resolving problems.
    • Must have a mindset of mentoring employees under supervision. Should be able to lead in a way that sets a good example, promotes teamwork, and encourages a positive, efficient work environment.
  • Miscellaneous
    • Performs other projects and duties as assigned.

  • General: Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed or are able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential responsibilities of the job, with or without reasonable accommodations in order to safely perform the essential responsibilities of the job.
  • Physical: Must be able to perform the following: talking, hearing, and seeing. Must have sufficient manual dexterity to be able to operate all office equipment including, but not limited to computers, printers, copiers, scanners, and telephones.
  • Confidentiality: Individuals must recognize that management of data, including personal information, grades, budgets, programs, and policies is necessary to the operation of the College. Such information must be kept private and confidential for the protection of the College and to obey Federal and/or State laws. Should there be doubt as to whether a certain matter is to be protected, it should be discussed with your supervisor before making a disclosure.
  • Mental: Must be able to reason, analyze, prioritize, conceptualize, make judgments, and solve problems.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum:
    • Education/Certification: Master?s degree in higher education, or related field.
    • Experience: Five (5) years of related experience in increasingly advanced supervisory roles in higher education environments.
    • Skill/Abilities:
      • Ability to articulate a Christian world view.
        • Ability to articulate an understanding of Christian higher education.
        • Ability to integrate best practices in student affairs from a Christian worldview.
        • Ability to express and role model one?s Christian faith in an open enrollment environment.
      • Ability to work with various offices and departments on campus (food service, maintenance, public relations, parent relations, emergency management, alumni relations, etc.).
        • Ability to present oneself in a professional manner.
      • Articulate an understanding of student leadership development practices.
        • Articulate an understanding of student retention practices.
        • Ability to work as a member of a team.
        • Ability to think creatively to serve a breadth of students.
        • Ability to articulate and assess learning outcomes for each aspect of the student activities program.
        • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
        • Desire to continually grow and develop as a student affairs? professional.
    • Christian Commitment: An eligible candidate must be a thoughtful and articulate Christian and an active member of a Protestant evangelical Christian church. Preference will be given to the candidate who supports and has an articulate understanding of the Reformed faith. An eligible candidate must understand and support the College?s ?Foundational Concepts of Christian Education? by expressing an evangelical Christian profession of faith and demonstrate the ability to integrate a Christian perspective in their work.
  • Preferred:
    • Education/Certification: Master?s degree in higher education, or related field.
    • Experience: Seven (7) years of related experience in increasingly advanced supervisory roles in higher education environments, five (5) of which are in residence life or comparable area.
