Gentry Locke Attorneys has an immediate opening for a full-time workers’ compensation paralegal in our Roanoke office. In order to be successful in our fast-paced environment, candidates must have a strong work ethic and possess excellent organizational and interpersonal skills. This position will primarily support workers’ compensation matters in a very busy practice group. The ability to work with multiple attorneys is a necessity for this position. Paralegal experience in worker’s compensation is preferred, however, candidates with litigation experience are also encouraged to apply. College/paralegal degree preferred. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and the willingness to learn modern technology required.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Follows the ethical requirements as set forth by the Rules of Professional Conduct of the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Reviews and analyzes cases in order to assist in preparation of case for trial and/or hearings.
- Reviews and analyzes matters for the purpose of preparing evaluations and status reports for clients.
- Assists Attorneys by preparing documents such as: drafts complaints and answers, routine notices, affidavits, motions, petitions and case status reports.
- Locates and confers with expert witnesses and resource people.
- Conducts research and locates cases, depositions, opinions, reports and supporting information. Performs assigned legal research using all available firm resources.
- Contacts and interviews parties, witnesses and experts, including obtaining written statements from witnesses.
- Reviews and outlines depositions and indexes and summarizes documents.
- Utilizes computerized litigation techniques and software when applicable.
- Assists attorneys in the trial of cases.
- Manages voluminous records, (i.e., medical records) and is familiar and mindful of Patient Privacy Act and confidentiality.
- Performs other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED OR PREFERRED:
- Demonstrated experience as a litigation paralegal required.
- Knowledge of legal principles and practices acquired through formal paralegal training or its equivalent.
- Ability to organize and prioritize numerous tasks and complete them under time constraints. Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when evaluating legal matters.
- Ability to proofread typed material for contextual, grammatical, typographical or spelling errors.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate in person, by e-mail and telephone, and follow instructions effectively from a diverse group of clients, attorneys and staff. Must be able to convey information with ordinary courtesy and tact.
- Work occasionally requires a high level of effort while organizing and maintaining multiple cases.
- Ability to retrieve, print and distribute volumes of client files and support information. Must be able to push and pull packages, and books weighing up to 20 pounds as well as retrieve and replace objects from shelves of up to 8 feet high.
- Work occasionally requires more than 40 hours per week. May also require irregular hours to perform the essential duties of the position.
- Ability to operate standard office equipment.
- Ability to travel to private and public buildings, locally and statewide, via private or public conveyance to assist attorney in attending to client needs on legal matters.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
