Position Title: Behavior Support Specialist
Location: Gentry Public Schools

Contract Length: 200 Days


Position Overview

Gentry Public Schools is seeking a skilled and compassionate Behavior Support Specialist to join our team. This role is crucial in supporting students with significant behavioral and mental health needs, including but not limited to Special Education and Alternative Learning Environment (ALE) classrooms. The successful candidate will collaborate with teachers, staff, and families to create supportive learning environments and provide direct behavioral interventions for students. The salary listed aligns with the minimum and maximum amounts for certified teachers based on 190 days. This position is for 200 days and may include additional stipends as outlined in our salary schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Data Collection and Analysis: Accurately collect and analyze student behavior data to develop and monitor effective behavioral interventions.
  • Collaboration and Teamwork: Work closely with educational teams to design and implement personalized behavior support strategies.
  • Behavior Plan Implementation: Implement and monitor Tier 3 behavior plans for students in need of more intensive behavioral support.
  • Training and Coaching: Provide training and coaching to teachers, paraprofessionals, and behavior technicians on behavior management techniques and interventions.
  • Student Growth Management: Manage data and track student progress to support academic and behavioral growth.
  • Long-term Behavior Support: Implement long-term strategies to maintain behavioral improvements and ensure continued student success.
  • Team Collaboration: Participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and contribute to school-wide events.
  • Professional Development: Engage in ongoing professional development activities to stay current in the field of behavioral support and special education.
  • Other Duties: Perform other tasks as assigned by the Behavior Specialist and Executive Director of Special Education.

Qualifications

  • Education: A Bachelor’s Degree in education or related field.
  • Certification: A valid certification in education or related field. A valid certification as a Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is preferred.
  • Experience: Prior experience supporting students with significant behavioral and mental health needs is preferred.
  • Knowledge:
    • Understanding of behavioral characteristics of students with severe behavioral needs.
    • Knowledge of trauma-informed education practices and applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
    • Familiarity with data collection, analysis, and the creation of action plans.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
    • Ability to handle emotionally charged situations with composure.
    • Ability to organize and coordinate tasks and collaborate effectively with others.

  • Stay informed about and understand the district's crisis management plan.
  • Exemplify professional excellence in the school, community, and on social media.
  • Focus on their designated responsibilities and collaborate effectively while respecting the boundaries of their role.
  • Serve as a strong advocate for the school district, promoting its values and achievements both internally and in the broader community.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and actively contribute to a supportive and constructive work environment, avoiding negativity.
  • Demonstrate reliable attendance to maximum student instruction and enhance learning outcomes.

Physical and Mental Demands

Ability to lift at least 30 pounds.

  • Ability to provide physical assistance to students in emergency situations, including evacuations or lockdowns.
  • Must have the stamina and agility required to care for active students in a school setting.

Work Environment

  • Works in standard office and school building environments.
  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.
  • May be required to provide student behavior support using appropriate restraint or seclusion techniques for student safety purposes.
