Requirements

The Fleet Shop Supervisor manages all the University vehicle and equipment consisting of over 600 vehicles, heavy equipment, landscape equipment, transit buses, 33 building emergency generators and all fuel storage tanks. They oversee the operation of the University fueling facility and fuel treatment and maintenance program. The incumbent plans, schedules and directs all activities to determine repair methods. Maintaining regulatory compliance in accordance with DC and Federal Laws, the Fleet Shop Supervisor oversee a repair parts inventory of $125,000 and has additional duties that include, but are not limited to :

Supervise fleet maintenance work on University vehicles and equipment.

Plan and schedule shop work, assist with diagnosing malfunctions, and determine repair methods and procedures, inspecting work for acceptance.

Maintain the parts supply inventory by ordering, tracking supplies, noting price changes, and stocking levels.

Assign daily work to mechanics, notifying customers of work status, performing quality control of completed work and follow-up of work assigned.

Computerize fuel, parts, and work order data.

Assist in fleet condition assessment, generator, and PM program reporting.

Participate in snow and ice removal, assigning work to plow crews.

Frequently pull, push lifts, and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally items in excess of 50 pounds.

Push, pull, turn, position and otherwise move parts, assemblies, components, equipment and tools often near or immediately adjacent to running engines where there is exposure to compressed air, electricity, belts, pulleys, fan blades and sharp edges.

Work Interactions

The incumbent interacts with the University community as vehicles and equipment are brought in for service. They must listen to issues of concern for users and communicate adequately what problems there may be with equipment to community and employees. The incumbent will work in a centralized equipment maintenance facility, mechanical rooms, and rooftops or wherever breakdowns occur, including in all weather conditions. They must continuously bend, reach, stretch, lift, stoop, climb, and crouch often on top of, in, and under vehicles and engines in cramped and awkward positions. The work is carried out in a ‘shop environment’ where loud noises, vibrations, dust, dirt and grease are normal. The Fleet Shop Supervisor performs strenuous work while standing, lying down, or sitting. The incumbent may be faced with hazardous work conditions working with spring loaded parts, lifts, and presses on wet and greasy floors, hot hydraulic fluids and oils, battery acid and cleaning solvents and at heights 10-20 feet above ground. These working conditions require employees to strictly follow University, OSHA, and other applicable safety procedures and regularly employ safety devices, eye and face shields, and respiratory masks and steel toe shoes. The person in this position will be continuously exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, bruises and strains as eye, ear, nose, throat and skin irritations.

Requirements and Qualifications

HS diploma or equivalent

Any combination of technical education and experience equivalent to three years of verifiable experience in problem diagnosis, repair, and inspection of a variety of automotive vehicles and engine-powered equipment; One year of verifiable management experience in a garage or maintenance facility and three or more years of mechanical skills preferred

Knowledge of the standard tools, equipment, test procedures, and practices used in the repair and preventive maintenance of equipment

Knowledge of the mechanical makeup, operation, and relationships of a variety of vehicles and engine powered equipment, transmissions and gear reduction systems, including those with torque converters, planetary gears and multiple gear ranges, driveline assemblies including differentials; hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems including their mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic controls

Knowledge of how computer, electrical, transistorized and other non-mechanical systems interact with and affect the operation of mechanical systems

Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the mechanical trades with the skills to diagnose mechanical and related malfunctions

Experience using the hand and power tools and equipment associated with the transit maintenance trade

Must be able to distinguish between colors and have the skills to remove and disassemble major components and assemblies such as engines, transmissions, and differentials

Comprehensive knowledge and CFC certification in all aspects of air conditioning systems, repair and maintenance, for all types equipment and vehicles

A valid current Class ‘B’ (CDL) motor vehicle operator’s license with air brake and passenger endorsement from employee’s state of residence and a Federal Environmental Protection Agency Air Conditioning Certification (Clean Air Act, 1990, Section 608 and 609) appropriate to the equipment serviced / inspected

Computer skills and working knowledge above entry level with the ability to prepare and present viable reports

Desirable to know Microsoft Office Complete, Excel, Word, and Access

Pay Range :

The projected salary or hourly pay range for this position which represents the full range of anticipated compensation is :

54,616.00 - $100,493.33

Compensation is determined by a number of factors including, but not limited to, the candidate’s individual qualifications, experience, education, skills, and certifications, as well as the University’s business needs and external factors.
