Global Education Advisor - Office of Global Education (OGE) - Georgetown University
The mission of Georgetown's Office of Global Education (OGE) is to promote, support, and develop international and intercultural educational opportunities for students and in so doing, help to define the international character of Georgetown.
The Global Education Advisor (GEA) advises students on academically appropriate study abroad opportunities within a designated portfolio of programs. The GEA provides advising, guidance, and support to undergraduate students throughout the study abroad life cycle (pre, during, and post). They manage the application and selection process and serve as the OGE liaison with partner institutions and on-campus advising/curricular deans from the undergraduate schools. The GEA serves as a resource regarding academic and logistical matters as it pertains to their programs. The GEA is responsible for program management and fiscal coordination of programs in their portfolio. The GEA organizes recruitment and cross-cultural programming for education abroad programs. They communicate with program partners, academic/curricular deans, and students to resolve issues.
Curricular and Intercultural Advising
Guides students on the selection of appropriate education abroad programs with regard to academic, personal, and professional goals.
Advises students on application process and logistics such as housing and visas.
Manages the application process in coordination with the OGE administration team and advising/curricular deans.
Conducts individual and group advising for prospective students on programs in assigned portfolio.
Provides support and addresses disciplinary, emotional, or physical issues with students to ensure preparedness to participate.
Conducts general and program-specific orientations to accepted students.
Liaises with academic/curricular deans and departments regarding transfer of credit from study abroad, as necessary.
Provides comprehensive support services to students abroad including assistance with resolving issues relating to cultural adjustment, housing concerns, academic expectations, program policies, etc.).
Responds to inquiries from parents/families, faculty, and staff on student-related matters.
Coordinates health and safety support for students while abroad and, under the guidance of OGE leadership, assists with emergency incidents.
Collaborates with OGE team and campus partners on reentry programming for returned students.
Program Management, Development, and Evaluation
As it pertains to programs within their designated portfolio:
Manages education abroad programs (direct enroll, exchange, and program provider), serving as the primary liaison with partner universities and program providers on issues including, but not limited to, academics, on-site programming, disciplinary matters, and health and safety.
Develops program budgets and enrollment and program fee projections.
Administers support that may include assistance with affiliated agreements, vendor and personal service contract management, coordination with local legal contacts, and institutional compliance.Develops and maintains participant materials for application, acceptance, registration, orientation, and evaluation.
Coordinates with OGE administration team on application, registration, and financial program processes.
Collaborates with OGE leadership on the evaluation of existing programs (including site visits and program reviews) and implements improvements as needed.
Manages academic information including suggested grade and credit equivalencies.
Identifies and brings any curricular issues to the attention of the OGE leadership.
Works toward development of new programs in regions and/or areas in collaboration with OGE leadership.
Outreach and Promotion
As it pertains to programs within their designated portfolio:
Works with the OGE team to implement a comprehensive annual plan for education abroad student recruitment.
Creates program brochures for newly approved programs and regularly reviews and updates existing ones.
Participates in OGE outreach and recruitment activities including information sessions, academic class visits, study abroad fairs, and program partner events.
Participates in Georgetown events promoting global education including admitted student days and parent and family weekend.
Representation and Professional Development
Represents OGE in on-campus, national, and international forums as assigned by the Senior Associate Director of Affiliated Programs and the Director of Global Education.
Participates in relevant professional development opportunities with the goal of developing new skills and knowledge which will assist the office in achieving its goals and objectives (funding permitted).
Qualifications
Bachelor's required - Master's in international education, higher education administration, or related field preferred
1 to 2 years of relevant experience in student advising and international education program administration or related field [note: consideration will be given to an equivalent combination of experience and preferred education]
Experience studying, working and/or living abroad
Excellent oral and written skills with demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of students, parents, faculty and university administrators
Strong intercultural skills and the ability to communicate - verbal and written - in one or more foreign languages is preferred - Spanish proficiency preferred
Commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion
Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a contributing team member, in order to meet established goals, objectives, and deadlines, and advance the overall success of the OGE office
Personal initiative
Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and function in a high volume/high traffic office setting
Willingness and availability for a flexible work schedule and assignment, including occasional evenings and weekends
Preferred qualifications
Familiarity with student development, experiential learning, and/or intercultural development theory and practice
Experience with Terra Dotta or other education abroad application management software
