Job Summary

Under the administrative direction of the Assistant Vice President for Student Health and Wellbeing, the Director pf Student Health Services is responsible for providing administrative and clinical leadership for Student Health Services. This position directly supervises staff within Student Health Services and also works collaboratively with Counseling Services and Health Promotion. This position requires administrative decision-making with a high degree of independence and the ability to analyze complex issues and determine solutions to multifaceted problems. Responsibilities include oversight of medical care for students; supervising and evaluating clinical practitioners; coordinating and directing clinical operations; and serving as a member of the Student Life Leadership team and CARE team. The Director provides leadership for Health Services and works collaboratively with associated staff, Student Life staff, and GCSU Administration in the development of policies, procedures and programs for overall student health and wellness.


Responsibilities

Administration - 40%
Supervises, directs, and evaluates the work performance of nurse practitioners, clinical staff, administrative staff, graduate assistants, and student assistants. Develops and coordinates provider scheduling to meet clinical staffing needs and makes recommendations for time and leave utilization. Oversees the Medical Records and Appointment Services to integrate policies and procedures, clarify scheduling concerns and provide consultation on issues impacting clinical services. Serves on the CARE Team to consult and intervene with students of concern. Oversees Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance activities and programs, including clinical and administrative dimensions of accreditation. As a member of the Student Life leadership team, serves as a key participant in formulating and recommending health services programs, policies, and procedures to the Assistant Vice President and university leadership. Serves as principal advisor in rendering professional expertise relative to university health issues. Responsible for coordinating the development and updating of clinical policies, procedures, and protocols. Responsible for drug formulary in conjunction with medical staff. Works with University System of Georgia personnel and interprets policy changes for clinical staff; attends Regents Advisory Committee meetings and consults with system directors to stay abreast of best practices.

Clinical Care and Oversight - 20%
Provides limited primary health care within the scope of their license for students on an appointment and walk-in basis, including clinical interview, physical diagnosis, psycho-social assessment, management of health and illness needs, and health education. Provides clinical leadership and consultation as appropriate on prevention, assessment, and management of health problems presented by SHS patients. Maintains and supplies records and documentation as required by the off-campus medical director/supervising physician. Keeps abreast of advances in diagnoses and treatment, as well as public health issues affecting GCSU students. Reviews health records as needed to determine appropriateness of care. Makes referrals to on-campus and off-campus resources as needed.

Fiduciary Responsibilities - 15%
Conducts annual fiscal planning and daily budget management. Utilizes management skills to determine medical supplies and equipment needs and other expenditures for the clinic. Responsible for preparing a 5-Year Business Plan on an annual basis following guidance from the Budget Office. Oversees all budgetary needs and accounts associated with Health Services. Oversees the use of and approves all purchases and purchase card expenditures and assures adherence to university policies. Regularly reviews and maintains contracts necessary for clinic operations.

Program Development and Support - 20%
Assists in development of health education programs for students, faculty, and staff. Identifies key issues in college health for short- and long-term strategic planning. Supervises development and implementation of services/ programs that meet the needs and demands of students seeking health services. Provides oversight of program/services reviews and evaluations and implementation of modification of programs/services in order to enhance the quality of care provided and outcomes achieved.

Other - 5%
Performs other duties as assigned including but not limited to serving on division or campus committees, develops initiatives for the department and division, and implementing special projects. The Director is responsible for sound decision making and accountability for areas of oversight. All Student Life employees will assist with at least three (3) student events/programs outside of regular business hours each semester. Events/programs include but are not limited to Week of Welcome, move-in days, Family Weekend, Homecoming, Spring Concert, University preview days, and Junior Day.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
Master's degree in nursing from an accredited program (Advanced Practice Registered Nurse, Family Nurse Practitioner) with national certification from American Nurses Credentialing Center or American Association of Nurse Practitioners.

Other Required Qualifications

Unrestricted license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Georgia.

Current possession of a DEA number for prescribing providers.

Current certification in CPR and AED.


Required Experience

Must have 5 years of increasing responsibility in health care delivery in nursing.

2 years direct supervisory / administrative responsibility over staff.

Must have 2 years experience as a practicing Advanced Practice Registered Nurse.


Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience
Previous experience in a health services clinic or similar setting within a Higher Education setting.

At least 2 years of increasingly responsible clinical experience at an outpatient ambulatory care clinic, college health center, emergency room facility, community health center, or nonprofit health center.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES
Ability to navigate sensitive, highly confidential situations. Ability to successfully supervise and manage highly trained nursing professionals as well as technical and support staff. Ability to accurately diagnose illnesses/injuries. Ability to perform all technical skills required for providing acute care and lab testing, such as drawing blood, giving injections, performing pelvic exams, obtaining specimens, operating the microscope, and performing other laboratory tests.

KNOWLEDGE
Understanding of HIPPA, FERPA, and other confidentiality guidelines. Understanding of insurance filing and reimbursement. Experienced and up to date in medical codes for electronic medical record charting and insurance filing. Knowledge of accreditation standards, medical laws, and medical ethics. Extensive knowledge of primary care out-patient clinic management within the scope of practice in Georgia. Complex knowledge of appropriate testing and treatments to order for illnesses/injuries. Complex knowledge of medications, their actions, interactions, and possible reactions.

SKILLS
Experience in healthcare delivery services and health promotion education programs focused on college-age students. Strong verbal and written communication skills.
