Job Summary

The Operations and Maintenance Department works to extend the life of University buildings, protect and maintain University assets, assist with construction projects and promote environmental sustainability. A dynamic team comprised of craftsmen work to ensure a safe, comfortable and pleasant working and learning environment for our students staff and visitors.Under the supervision of the manager/supervisor in the Operations and Maintenance Department, this is a skilled level painter position responsible for painting the interior and exterior finishes of campus facilities. This position requires the preparation of surfaces to receive primer, coatings or paint followed by the application of paint and coatings to the interior and exterior surfaces of the institution's facilities. Perform exterior building wash. Paint the institution's buildings and facilities, interior and exterior finishes. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.

Responsibilities

Painting - 50
Prepare surfaces by use of sandpaper/sandblaster, steel wool, scrapers, washing with cleaner and water. Patch and repair sheet rock or plaster walls. Apply spray texture to ceilings and walls. Apply caulk to interior joints and seams. Apply coatings, paints, sealers and solvents to exterior and interior building surfaces. Paint interior and exterior walls, floors and ceilings with paint brushes, rollers, and/spray guns. Varnish, stain, shellac, and add finishes to desks, doors, cabinets, moldings and floors. Apply exterior caulking to building joints and seams. Trim windows and doors. Scrape and glaze windows. Apply exterior waterproofing
coatings.

Washing/Cleaning - 30
Wash exterior windows, buildings, walls and patios. Wash interior windows and surfaces where applicable.

Compliance - 5
Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.

Inventory - 10
Maintain work area and paint shop, stock supplies and manage waste generated from work tasks. Mix paint, clean and organize tools and equipment, set up and break down ladders and scaffolding required for painting tasks.

Other - 5
Any other duties and tasks assigned or as required to meet the goals of the department, division, and Georgia College & State University.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements
High school diploma or GED

Other Required Qualifications
Ability to operate a computer or iPad in order to receive and send email and submit work orders; Valid driver's license

Required Experience
3-5 years of related work experience

Preferred Qualifications

Additional Preferred Qualifications
Vocational or technical training in a related field of study.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES
Ability to operate scissor lift, telescopic lift, vehicle/cart, and/or pressure washer; handle constant manual labor, including carrying 25 lbs. consistently, and lift up to/over 50 lbs. occasionally in varying outdoor weather conditions; ability to organize tools and materials, thin or mix stains, paints or coatings; ability to read, understand, follow, and enforce safety procedures, read and comprehend technical manuals and SDS sheets.
Ability to work in extreme conditions:
Outdoor Environment: Employees work outdoors and may not be protected from weather conditions. Extreme Cold: Temperatures typically below 32 degrees for more than an hour.
Extreme Heat: Temperatures above 100 degrees for more than an hour.
Noise: Sufficient noise to cause you to shout in order to be heard above the noise level. Vibration: Exposure to oscillating movements of extremities or whole body.
Hazards: Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, or exposure to chemicals. Oils: There is an air or skin exposure to oils or other cutting fluids
Conditions that affect the respiratory system, such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.

KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of glazing windows. Working knowledge of concepts, practices and procedures and ability to use in varied situations.

Knowledge of safety requirements for all conditions including weather, equipment and chemicals.

SKILLS
Skill in painting with paint brushes, rollers, and spray guns. Skill in selecting, mixing, and applying paint and associated products. Skill in surface preparation, staining, and/or sealing and priming techniques.
