What are the responsibilities and job description for the Electromagnetic Physicist/Engineer - Open Rank-ACL position at Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI)?
ID: 499040
Type: Researchers
Location: Atlanta, GA
Categories: Antenna, Electromagnetics, RF
The Advanced Concepts Laboratory (ACL) of the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) seeks qualified individuals for the position of Electromagnetics Engineer/Physicist. This position involves applying electromagnetic theory to solve challenging problems utilizing the EM spectrum. This candidate will apply theory, modeling, and/or measurement skills to various applications, often focused on EM applications for national defense. The candidate will work in and sometimes lead an interdisciplinary team with computational electromagnetics modeling engineers, RF system engineers, mechanical engineers, and EM measurement specialists.
This position will be in the Electromagnetics Division, which develops wideband and adaptive RF systems that integrate apertures, electronics, and materials, augmented by a novel infrastructure for full electromagnetic characterization. This division is part of the Advanced Concepts Laboratory, which develops tailored solutions for a broad range of national security challenges through disciplined application of physics- and effects-based modeling to realizable systems, augmented with prototype development and testing. ACL's research thrusts extend across domains, and include bio-, chemical-, RF-, and optical-sensor physics; materials science and engineering; electromagnetic theory, computation, structures, and measurements; electronic warfare techniques and applications; operational scenario modeling and simulation; traditional and asymmetric threat analysis; and ground maneuver warfare.
Designs, develops, analyzes, and tests Radio Frequency (RF) hardware, including antenna, transmitter, and receiver hardware. Designs and develops RF hardware as part of a system architecture over a range of frequencies from 3 kHz to 300 GHz. Analyzes RF hardware performance with modeling and simulation tools, including electromagnetic computational codes. Characterizes and tests RF hardware performance in a stand-alone laboratory environment and in an installed system environment. Prototypes RF hardware and systems to determine design feasibility. Integrates COTS and custom designed RF hardware into large scale systems. Plans and conducts RF hardware component tests and system level testing in a lab and on installed systems to verify specification compliance and system performance.
Key Responsibilities- Programmatic and technical lead (as principal investigator, co-PI, or technical task lead), developing requirements and directing others to perform design and theory research and lab testing tasks
- Perform significant team development and mentoring others in highly specialized tasks in research areas of expertise
- Document and direct others of documenting work of design, theory, and test in written and presentation form as programmatic and technical lead
- Primary lead on development of whitepapers, proposals, and sponsor engagement to support multiple programs in research areas of expertise
- Provide technical vision to sponsors for future research areas
- Primary author and mentor for technical reports/presentations of projects, journal articles, and conference presentations
Successful applicant will perform research in the areas of antenna design, electromagnetic, materials characterization, computational electromagnetics, RF design, electromagnetic measurements, integrated circuit design, or related areas. The candidate will be expected to be well-versed in standard practices in one or more of these areas, and capable of applying and expanding this knowledge base. Candidates should be willing to work on multiple projects and be willing to learn new skills to meet future project needs.
