Job Description

This job is for a Graduate / Undergraduate Intern position to work in the Electro-Optical and Infrared Systems Division (EISD) within the Electro-Optical Systems Laboratory (EOSL) at the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) for the Summer 2025 semester.

The candidate will work with teams on projects that identify novel Electro-Optical / Infrared (EO / IR) sensing modalities, analyze and develop prototype optical systems and associated electronics and algorithms, and identify electro-optical hardware / software components (lenses, telescopes, modulators, detectors, amplifiers, computing architectures, etc.) required to implement the aforementioned systems.

EISD's research is performed in all areas of the imaging chain. From basic geometric / radiometric modeling and analysis, through design and fabrication, to test and evaluation in the field, our team provides subject matter expertise to our customers in order to solve their most challenging problems. Our portfolio consists of research programs in and related to the following application areas : Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR); Undersea Warfare; Atmospheric Optics; Tactical Imaging, e.g. Degraded Visual Environments (DVE); Automatic Target Recognition; Intelligence Processing, Exploitation, and Dissemination (PED); Directed Energy (DE); Free-space Optical Communications; Space Situational Awareness (SSA); Tagging, Tracking, and Locating (TTL); Remote Sensing; etc.

Required Minimum Qualifications

Intern

  • Pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's degree or PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, Aerospace Engineering, Imaging Science, or related field
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Full-Time Intern- Must be registered for Full-time Internship Credit

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with design, development, and integration of optical systems
  • Experience developing image processing and / or computer vision algorithms
  • Experience with lidar and / or remote sensing instrumentation
  • Experience with optical detectors and testing equipment
  • Experience implementing algorithms using one or more of the following : C / C , Python, and / or MATLAB
  • Task / team leadership experience
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Familiarity with Linux and open-source tools
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas
  • Strong publication history and evidence of presenting research in the community
  • Hours per Week

    Due to our research contracts with the US federal government, candidates for this position are required to be US Citizens.

    Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
