Key Responsibilities
- Assist clients and community groups under attorney supervision, focusing on civil legal matters such as affordable housing, environmental justice, and community development.
- Conduct outreach and legal education within the community, providing essential information and fostering positive relationships.
- Collaborate with attorneys and advocates to assist clients and community groups in enhancing their circumstances.
- Manage client intake by answering queries, performing initial assessments, and directing clients to appropriate resources.
- Investigate and develop cases, perform interviews, and support attorneys in the preparation of legal documents, including pleadings and discovery.
- File legal documents electronically and communicate with court personnel, opposing counsel, and clients.
- Maintain organized and accurate client files, ensuring timely adherence to deadlines.
- Assist with translation for clients as required.
- Participate in staff meetings and training programs to advance your legal expertise.
- Regularly report on caseloads and advocacy initiatives to the supervising attorney or director.
- Travel as necessary to attend meetings or support clients and community groups.
- Excellent communication skills, with a focus on both written and verbal interactions.
- Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and self-motivation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, along with comfort in utilizing electronic case management systems.
- Ability to work independently while ensuring confidentiality and exercising sound judgment.
- Flexibility to adapt to a varied work schedule, including evenings and weekends when necessary.
- Fluency in Spanish is preferred but not required.
- An Associate's Degree and paralegal certification are preferred.
- A minimum of two years of relevant paralegal experience is preferred.
- Experience working with low-income communities or in community organizing is advantageous.
