Job Summary
School bus drivers transport students safely to and from school and related events. They pick up students at designated locations, such as street corners or homes, and drop them off at school.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Transport students in a timely manner to and from school and/or school activities while following safety procedures and applicable State Board of Education rules and regulations.
- Operate and safely drive a school bus in various weather, road, and traffic conditions while transporting passengers to school or special events. Comply with traffic regulations while operating vehicles in a safe and courteous manner.
- Communicate bus rules, safety, and behavior requirements to passengers; address improper behavior immediately using appropriate interpersonal communication skills.
- Communicate with student's parents to solve inappropriate or unsafe behavior utilizing strong interpersonal communication skills.
- Assist students and passengers boarding and unloading the bus when necessary, including wheelchair students and adaptive equipment.
- Inspect buses daily to identify and report deficiencies. Perform vehicle maintenance procedures such as checking fluid and fuel levels, tire pressure, cleaning internal and external areas, installing tire chains, and other normal daily maintenance as required.
- Regulate heating, lighting, and ventilating systems for passenger comfort.
- Responsible to know rules, regulations (Federal, State, and District) and laws concerning operation of a school bus; comply with all traffic regulations.
- Comply with DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements.
- Complete all records and reports timely and accurately and submit to the Transportation Department.
- Read maps, follow written and geographic directions according to route/trip logs.
- Operation of a two-way radio.
- Maintain cleanliness to ensure safe operating conditions.
- Perform other duties as assigned by leadership.
Experience and Skill Requirements
- Class A or B CDL, or the ability to obtain.
- Endorsements: Passenger (P) and School Bus (S), or as required.
- Ability to pass a medical examination.

- Dependability: Demonstrated ability to consistently be at work and on time as scheduled, follow instructions, respond to management direction, and solicit feedback to improve performance.
