Ghirardelli Associates is currently looking to hire an Assistant Materials Representative. This is an opportunity to work with an experienced team of professionals!
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Assistant Materials Representative is a key member of the materials engineering and source inspection program. The ideal candidates will be responsible for supporting with coordinating and reviewing documents associated with various construction projects. The Assistant Materials Representative shall be responsible for providing support on all matters related to Quality Assurance (QA) of construction projects that are on the State Highway System. Must be able to understand contracts that are complex in nature and perform a wide range of activities and assignments daily, including but not limited to; coordinating with various project personnel, conduct project submittal reviews, coordinate source inspection activities, track project resources, provide technical materials support, assist with plan/specification interpretation, conduct client and customer outreach, and various tasks as needed.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work with METS’ customers and support Materials Representatives. METS customers are Resident Engineers (RE), Structure Representatives (SR), District Materials Engineers (DME), Design, Contractors, Suppliers and Fabricators. Conduct various materials-related meetings and help support effective materials management for the project.
- Support with Quality Assurance and acceptance of work products pursuant to QA activities in accordance with the guidelines set forth by Caltrans.
- Support with developing objective and reasonable materials engineering decisions related to ensuring materials and products used in highway construction projects comply with contract requirements including performing project engineering reviews to identify material-related issues that may affect project quality.
- Assist Caltrans in anticipating and resolving any issues associated with material source inspection and QA activities. Meets with appropriate Caltrans project personnel to assist with documenting materials related issues and developing solutions consistent with project documents and METS’ Quality System Manuals.
- Provide support to METS’ customers regarding materials inspection requirements.
- Maintain standards and consistency while minimizing the impact on project schedule and cost.
- Visit job sites, fabrication and manufacturing shops as needed to ensure adequate QC/QMA measures are employed to ensure compliance with the project requirements.
- Conduct outreach to METS’ customers, which includes giving technical presentations and providing training on construction specifications.
- Maintain materials management records for various projects. Travel to field offices for face-to-face meetings.
- Track project resources and work with appropriate State staff to manage resource requests as needed. Work with Project Management staff to obtain information for upcoming projects.
- Work with project personnel to ensure fabrication quality control plans are reviewed and approved before the start of work.
- Attend regular meetings with staff from regional offices to brief on project issues and participate in cross-training.
- Review and provide comments on office guidance and manuals as requested by METS.
- Participate in technical committees as assigned by METS.
- Track metrics on project and program efforts.
- Report on project and program progress to Materials Representatives on the following:
- Internal Outreach
- External Outreach
- Other efforts as assigned
DESIRED SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor’s degree from an ABET accredited university in Civil engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
- OR Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience working in the construction/civil engineering industry, public works, or large industrial construction projects with a focus on Materials Quality Assurance and Source Inspection preferred.
- Experience with METS/Caltrans a plus.
- Familiarity with project reporting and creation of monthly project metrics.
- Ability to use and interpret contract documents, drawings, schedule, and quality control plans.
- Strong written/verbal communication skills and ability to develop and give technical presentations.
- Ability to network with construction personnel to plan and support outreach events.
- Understanding of document management systems.
- Basic knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws, rules, and regulations governing public works construction contracting.
- Excellent organizational, interpersonal and time management skills.
- Ability to work in the client office Monday through Friday
- Ability to travel through California as needed. Occasional out of state travel possible.

Wage Range: $68.00 - $86.00 per hour
