The Recreation Coordinator ensures a viable recreational program is in place to provide services to all Community members of the Gila River Indian Community to include planning, developing implementing and coordinating recreational activities, physical education and community awareness. A major accountability is to liaise and communicate with other agencies, groups, persons and interested parties for the Community, including village areas.
· Responsible for scheduling and supervising recreational activities; liaison and consulting activities may require unusual, irregular and sometimes lengthy work hours.
· Responsible for the provision and storage of all recreational equipment and supplies, includes planning, acquisition, dispensing, inventory, maintenance and care of such.
· Responsible for the safe and secure implementation of recreational activities.
· Prepares reports on recreation activities and other statistics in area of responsibility.
· Submit reports and documents to supervisor and Community as required.
· Coordinate and communicate with Gila River Tribal agencies and other programs to plan and develop recreational program and activities.
· Assist with recreational, leisure and educational programs and activities that may include swimming pool supervision and oversight, aerobic classes, computer lab, mentoring program, elderly and child exercise programs, etc.
· Investigate and resolve Community complaints on matters related to recreation.
· Provides excellent customer services to both internal and external customers.
· Attend meetings as they relate to recreational activities.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
· Some knowledge of principles and theory for recreation and physical education and its application to Native American communities.
· Ability to evaluate programs, prepare records and reports.
· Ability to plan, organize and schedule recreational activities effectively.
· Ability to communicate ideas and instructions to Native people.
· Ability to work in various weather conditions.
· Ability to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
· Ability to interact tactfully and courteously with the public.
· Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.
· Must be dependable.
· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Community Official and the public.
· Ability to perform all physical requirements of the position; agree to maintain a Drug-free workplace.
· Associate degree from an accredited college or university in Recreation Administration, Physical Education, Public or Business Administration or a closely related field and a minimum of three (3) years of successful experience in recreationprograms which included planning, implementation and coordination; or
· A minimum of five (5) years’ experience in recreation programs which included planning, implementation and coordination.
· Experience working with elders and speaking and/or understanding of the Pima Language and culture is preferred.
· Bachelor’s degree in Recreation, Public Administration or closely related field preferred.
· Required to obtain a Tribal Operator’s permit. Valid state driver’s license with proof of driving record for the past 39 months will be required to qualify for a tribal driving permit. Proof of driving record must be submitted with application and must not be more than 60 days old from the date of submission of the application
· Background checks are required for positions that involve regular contact with or control over Community Children in accordance with The Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act, 25 U.S.C. Section 3201 through 3210 and C.F.R. Part 63 and positions that have regular contact with the Elderly.
