Camp Counselor, Camp Tapawingo
A Camp Counselor has an awesome summer outdoors, being a mentor to girls, and providing fun all day long! Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Camp is one of the outlets to make that mission a reality for many girls. A Camp Counselor is a part of that mission each summer.
You will have the opportunity to acquire optional certifications, paid for by Girl Scouts of Central Illinois. Those include: standard first aid and CPR, lifeguarding, archery, boating, and challenge course.
Responsibilities:
- Live on site as an overnight employee during camp season (Sunday-Friday, required. Saturday, optional).
- Work with the Camp Director and Assistant Camp Director to plan and implement activities and experiences in the group through girl-led planning, the session theme, and the Girl Scout program emphasis.
- Observe and supervise camper behavior, identify and respond to hazards, assist campers in emergencies (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury).
- Teach and promote respect for others: valuing and understanding differences and similarities of campers and staff.
- Possess the strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers, ensuring their physical and emotional health and safety at all times.
- Assist in maintaining sanitation, housekeeping, and care of camp grounds, supplies and equipment.
- Assist with the storing and packing of equipment for safety during, and at the end of the season.
- Inform the Camp Director of day-to-day group successes and concerns, as well as camper health and other group issues.
- Maintain a good rapport with parents and the community.
- Keep required records and reports as requested by Camp Director and/or Assistant Camp Director.
- Assist with check-in and check-out procedures.
- Assist with the season opening and closing of the camp.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- Believe in the mission of Girl Scouting.
- Good character, integrity, adaptability, patience, sense of humor, and enthusiasm.
- Hold or be willing to obtain current certification of standard First Aid and CPR (training to be provided).
- Produce a physical signed by a medical professional within the past 24 months.
- Training and/or experience working with children in an outdoor setting.
- Good time management, organization and communication skills.
- Ability to accept guidance and supervision and relate to one’s peer group.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Ability to pass a background check.
- Ability to provide two professional references.
Physical Requirements:
- Walking, standing, bending, stooping, reaching and lifting 20 - 50 pounds.
- Daily exposure to seasonal weather conditions.
