JOB SUMMARY
The Camp Director must have a passion for the outdoors, the ability to inspire and lead our youth development-focused camp programs, and the capability to manage a year-round camp business. The ideal candidate will take a visionary approach to opportunities and be able to convey a clear understanding of the organization’s mission. The Camp Director is a role model for Girl Scouts. S/he should be actively involved in the camp program, but day-to-day will primarily focus on camp management, including budget, staffing, risk & safety, and property & facilities.
The Camp Director leads a team that provides outstanding year-round outdoor programs and exceptional customer service while building relationships within the community. This position manages the camp's physical facility to ensure safety, cleanliness, and financial stability.
About the Camp:
Located 50 miles southwest of Atlanta in Luthersville, GA, Camp Meriwether has 270 acres of rolling hills, shady woods, two lakes, and open fields. This camp property is known for its immersive equestrian program, which specializes in English riding. Meriwether can serve a little over 100 campers in its current cabins, with additional space for tent camping. A camp director residence is available, although living on-site is not required.
Qualifications
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Program and Services Delivery:
- Provide leadership and direction for the Camp while evaluating, planning, and directing camp operations, health and safety, and programs.
- Plan, develop, and direct summer sleepaway camp program and 3-seasons event programs with the support of the camp team that meets the needs and interests of Girl Scout members and other girls in the camp’s target populations. Pursue rental opportunities and other revenue streams to support the financial sustainability of the camp.
- Ensure delivery of camp programs in a safe and quality manner.
- Ensure the coordination of food services and program services.
- Supervise the administration of high-risk activities that include pool, horses, archery, and challenge course
- Have a visible, regular presence on the front lines while summer camp is in session
- Provide exceptional customer service to families and youth. Support registration of all events, which the Camp operations team manages.
- Oversee the planning and execution of mid-week and weekend outdoor program opportunities in non-summer months for Girl Scout groups and other users in coordination with the camp operations team.
- Grow and promote interest-based programming at camp, including aquatic/lakefront paddle sports.
- Grow and promote our equestrian program, in coordination with the barn staff, focusing on English riding.
- In partnership with the Outcomes Manager, annually seek and analyze feedback from girls, families, and staff regarding the quality, safety, and enjoyment of the programs, facilities, and staff to identify improvement areas and improve the programming quality. Advocate and plan for new programming to drive engagement and outcomes for girls that will support long-term sustainability of camps.
Budget Management:
- Forecast, plan, and manage an annual camp budget. Is responsible for meeting annual revenue goals, with a long-term goal to increase revenue streams through new opportunities. In partnership with the executive team, plan for funding fixed assets and other major property and facilities investments.
- Work with the executive and fund development teams to support master planning and capital campaign work for camp property.
Supervision
- Supervise the full-time regular staff team, including assistant camp director(s), barn manager, equestrian specialist, ranger, and maintenance specialist. Ensure the hiring and onboarding of up to 75 seasonal staff who execute summer camp, support weekend events and activities during 3 seasons (fall, winter, spring), and support rentals and other special events.
- Plan for, monitor, and address staff morale and resolve personnel conflicts.
Facility Management:
- Manage a ranger team responsible for maintenance and care of the property and facilities.
- Work with Camp Ranger to create and implement a proactive maintenance and risk plan.
Marketing
- Develop a plan for and market camp and year-round programs to internal and external audiences, aligned with overall planning in partnership with marketing and the camp director team.
- Focus on recruitment and retention of campers, recruitment and retention of quality camp staff, and building new revenue-generating opportunities for camp.
Risk & Safety
- Work with the Risk Manager and other teams to manage risk and safety throughout camp. Ensure the health and safety of campers and staff.
- In partnership with the Risk team and camp director team, develop and implement crisis and risk management procedures, including, but not limited to, all required safety training and incident management, dam management, well management, forest management, and lake management.
- Lead on ensuring continued accreditation of camp by the American Camp Association.
- Support the council’s mission statement, goals, and objectives.
- Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Skills & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Excels in developing strategies for camp expansion and growth
- A minimum of seven years experience directing a summer camp
- Commitment to the Girl Scout approach to outdoor education and experiential learning
- Strong leadership abilities
- Writes clearly, tactfully, and effectively, demonstrating strong grammar and usage skills
- Enthusiasm, energy, and a positive presence as a role model
- Must hold a valid driver’s license
- Working knowledge of computer software, word processing, and database operations
- Must be at least 25 years of age
