Position Summary

To further the mission of the camp through the planning, delivery, and supervision of equestrian program activities and events. The Equestrian Supervisor will design and deliver program activities that are safe, fun, and appropriate to the campers’ age and abilities. This position will work in partnership with the Wrangler Supervisor to plan and deliver a robust equestrian program. The Equestrian Supervisor will supervise activity specialists assigned to the equestrian center. They will assist in the management of the overall camp operation under the direction of the Camp Director.

GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just ninety miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery. 

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Plan, direct, and supervise a safe, innovative, and fun equestrian program under the direction of the Outdoor Program Supervisor.
    • Coordinate (with the help of equestrian specialists) schedules that meet camp goals. 
    • Work with the Wrangler Supervisor to evaluate equestrian abilities of campers and staff. 
    • Deliver progressive and creative equestrian program activities. 
    • Plan tailored programs for each village that are specific to camper programs
  2. Train and supervise equestrian specialists. 
    • Work with the Wrangler Supervisor to establish training and processes to be implemented into the equestrian program.
    • Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training. 
    • Train equestrian specialists and camp staff in their equestrian program responsibilities. 
    • Schedule, supervise, and evaluate equestrian specialists to provide a safe and high-quality program. 
    • Work with the Wrangler Supervisor to assist them in the management of the physical facilities and equipment in the equestrian program area. 
  3. Set up equestrian center areas. 
    • Conduct pre-season and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment prioritizing safety. 
    • Check equipment and report maintenance requests to the GSGLA Camp Director. 
    • Conduct a daily check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair. 
    • Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials. 
    • Survey the equestrian area daily and keep the area free of hazards and debris. 
    • Follow and promote safety processes that follow GSGLA and our equestrian contract’s details. 
  4. Participate as a member of the camp staff team. 
    • Attend all camp staff meetings. 
    • Assist in the planning of any special events at or near the equestrian center. 
    • Provide check in/out support and outstanding customer service to families.  
    • Sitting with assigned villages at mealtime to ensure campers are involved and eating.
    • Helping assigned village staff at mealtimes
  5. Other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Must be 21 years of age.
  • Must have prior experience in facilitating an equestrian program in an overnight camp setting. 
  • Ability to mount and dismount campers and/or yourself on a 16.2 hand horse with no assistance.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid CPR/First Aid Certification throughout the position’s employment dates. Training will be available.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.  
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend pre-camp training. 
  • Needs to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. 
  • Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain. 
  • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. 
  • Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation. 
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
  • Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience 

  • College credits in health, child development, education, psychology, or related field.
  • Prior supervision of an equestrian program in an overnight camp setting. 
  • Certifications related to horseback riding.

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned

Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exemptions as required by law.
