Position Summary

The Health Supervisor, under the supervision of the Outdoor Program Supervisor/Camp Director and under the standing orders and technical direction of a licensed physician, is responsible for adhering to all GSUSA Safety Activity Checkpoints and the GSGLA Camp Lakota Health Manual. The Health Supervisor is responsible for promoting the general health, safety, and sanitation of the campers and staff. The Health Supervisor ensures that the policies, procedures, and protocols contained in the GSGLA Camp Lakota Health Manual are followed.

GSGLA Lakota Overnight Camp

The Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Camp Lakota is a state of the art, recently updated residential camp. Located just ninety miles from downtown Los Angeles, this premier camp site will host a full summer camp season. The camp will focus on providing a stand-out girl-led experience for campers of all ages and communities across our 6,272 square mile footprint. The camp offers a variety of specialty activities including a high ropes challenge course, horseback riding, swimming, and archery. 

The camp operates with daily exposure to various weather conditions and animals such as bugs, raccoons, and other wilderness animals common to the area.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  1. Provide health care to meet the individual needs of camp staff and campers.
    • Lead daily medication management.
    • Supervise and provide care for both staff and campers seeking medical attention.
    • Provide CPR and First Aid coverage as needed at designated times and locations.
    • Provide direct care to staff within the scope of their skills, the camp’s health care manual, and treatment plan.
    • Collaborate with administrative camp staff and other medical staff as necessary to ensure medical needs are met.
  2. Organize, maintain, and utilize adequate resources for serving the health and medical needs of the campers and staff.
    • Set up the camp Health Center.
    • In collaboration with the camp director, identify inventory needs and order and maintain stock of all necessary medical supplies and equipment identified in the GGSLA Camp Lakota health manual.
  3. Maintain accurate and detailed medical records according to state, American Camp Association, and GSGLA standards.
    • Ensure staff and camper health examinations are current and on file.
    • Prepare and utilize daily medical log for treatment and medications.
    • Prepare and record insurance and accident report forms.
    • Record and maintain caregiver communication logs.
  4. Oversee First Aid procedures and supplies.
    • Prepare and distribute first aid kits as needed throughout camp.
    • Ensure supplies in first aid kits are stocked in accordance with the GGSLA Camp Lakota health manual and distributed as needed.
  5. In collaboration with the camp director, facilitate a staff orientation session on general camp health practices.
    • Provide or ensure orientation is provided that includes specific camper health and social needs, health center procedures, and first aid in the camp setting.
  6. Screen all campers and staff upon arrival at camp.
    • Verify health history and examination.
    • Verify emergency authorization.
    • Identify any observable evidence of illness or communicable diseases.
    • Conduct a health assessment.
    • Secure all medications used by campers and staff.
  7. Supervise sanitary conditions throughout camp.
    • Report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.
  8. Participate and effectively communicate as a member of the camp team.
    • Address staff and campers’ health concerns in a timely manner and report any health problems or symptoms of illness to the Camp Director.
    • Serve as a role model through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, involvement, and empowerment of youth.
    • Participate as a member of the camp staff team to deliver and supervise evening programs, special programs, sleep outs, and other all-camp activities and camp functions.
  9. Other duties as assigned

Qualifications


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Registered nurse (RN), physician, or EMT with a license as required by state law.
  • Experience in both child and adult illness/injury care.
  • Must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Ability to drive, possession of a valid driver’s license, and clean DMV record.
  • Must submit a basic health history form as set by the American Camping Association.  
  • Must be committed to work the entire camp season and attend pre-camp trainings.
  • Needs to traverse and move several miles daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain. 
  • Possess endurance including prolonged standing, some bending, stooping, and stretching. 
  • Needs to sustain activity at 6,000 feet (1830 meters) in elevation. 
  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs. periodically. If more, the incumbent must request assistance.
  • Must be able to live in a rustic camp setting and work flexible hours.

Recommended Education, Training and Experience 

  • College credits in health, child development, education, psychology, or related field.
  • Prior experience working in an overnight camp health setting. 

GSGLA Employee Requirements

  • Comply with state-mandated reporter training
  • Attend GSGLA signature events and/or other activities as assigned

Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles requires its employees to be vaccinated against COVID-19, subject to certain exemptions as required by law.
