The Aquatics Director oversees all water activities at camp including swimming and boating. The Aquatic Director is responsible for swim-testing all campers and staff, keeping records of water/beach conditions and swimmer abilities, and oversees the lifeguard staff.

Camp Is-Sho-Da: Our Camps are unique and shaped by the physical, and outdoor spaces in which they take place, the team-building nature of our activities, and the welcoming environment that we strive to create Camp Is-Sho-Da is located on 100 acres of fields and woods in East Greenbush, NY. Camp Is-Sho-Da is a great option to enjoy all the best of camp for children in kindergarten through grade 12. With hiking trails, a five-acre pond for water activities, a large playfield, and facilities for nature study and artmaking, there is always something fun to do. Rustic screened enclosed shelters, platform tents, and covered wagons offer a variety of options for camping. While Is-Sho-Da is a Day Camp this summer, there is one night each week when campers stay overnight.
Summer Camp Employment dates at Camp Is-Sho-Da are June 29th – August 15th 2025. These dates include pre-camp training and post-camp clean-up. Camp staff generally work 8:00am to 5:00pm Monday through Friday. All staff stay overnight with campers Wednesday night.
Essential duties
1. Camper Supervision
a. Ensure camper safety (physical, emotional, & mental)
b. Apply basic youth development principles in working with campers through communication, relationship development, respect for diversity, active involvement and empowerment of youth
c. Manage camper behaviors with appropriate guidance and reinforcement
d. Provide quality support that resolves concerns by offering creative solutions in a timely manner
e. Provide constant supervision of campers
- Assist with daily living within units
f. Plan and facilitate age-appropriate camp activities
2. Camper Engagement
a. Uphold and consistently model the Girl Scout Mission & Law
b. Be a positive role model for campers and peers as an active member of camp community, maintaining positive relationships
c. Demonstrate cultural competence in interacting with campers, staff, caregivers focusing on inclusivity & sense of belonging
3. Program Facilitation
a. Plan, prepare, & facilitate daily activities based on campers age, abilities and interest in connection with week’s theme or programmatic needs, in alignment with GSNENY mission and outcomes, including games, arts & crafts, outdoor skills, team building, camp traditions
- Create weekly schedule, lesson plans as needed
- Build and implement program progression to meet all abilities and needs
b. Actively engage/ participate in programs areas as assigned
c. Assist in planning/implementing of “all camp”, and evening activities and camp functions, and traditions
4. Health & Safety
a. Proactively maintain high standards of health and safety in all activities for campers & staff
- Follow all policies and procedures set by GSNENY, ACA, DOH, SAC, etc.
- Ensure work areas & activities are safe and meet all requirements
- Report broken or damaged equipment or other hazards to the appropriate person in a timely manner and take appropriate action to keep others safe
- Be alert to campers and staff needs and assist them with personal and/or health problems
- Ensure overall camp cleanliness/ upkeep – following Camp policy& protocols
- Follow the chain of command to solve problems and mediate solutions including reporting issues to the Camp Director, Assistant Director, or Health Director when appropriate
b. Daily supervision and monitoring of campers and their needs
c. Ensure proper health maintenance care, including campers' medication administered by health director
5. Mentorship & Role Modeling
a. Promote & support the principles of the Girl Scout Leadership experience and the core philosophies of GSUSA and GSNENY
b. Work collaboratively with other camp staff to ensure a positive camp experience for campers, caregivers and staff
c. Maintain effective and collaborative working relationships with the camp team using open respectful communication
d. Complete assigned tasks as scheduled and communicate any challenges or delays promptly
e. Actively participate in trainings, at a satisfactory level to achieve training or certification credit
f. Take initiative, identify areas of need, and complete other duties as assigned
g. Participate enthusiastically in all camp activities, planning and leading those as assigned
6. Administrative Duties
a. Complete logs, daily/weekly reports, and other requirement documentation
b. Communicate proactively with Camp Director/ Assistant Director about camper/ program needs, updates, or changes
c. Utilize specialized skills in accordance with training and certification (First Aid, CPR, waterfront skills, ropes, archery, etc.)
d. Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communications as requested
7. Plan, direct, and supervise a safe and fun waterfront program
a. Write lesson plans that meet camp goals
b. Evaluate aquatics abilities of campers and staff
c. Deliver creative swim and watercraft program activities
8. Train and supervise waterfront staff
a. Assist in the planning and implementation of staff training
b. Train waterfront, unit staff, and program staff in their waterfront responsibilities and aquatic emergency response procedures
c. Supervise waterfront staff to provide a safe and high-quality program
d. Supervise the waterfront staff evaluation process
e. Implement the scheduling of waterfront staff
f. Directly supervise other aquatic staff
9. Manage the physical facilities and equipment in the waterfront program area
a. Set up waterfront area prior to and during staff training
b. Teach and monitor proper use of equipment
c. Conduct initial and end-of-season inventory, and store equipment for safety.
d. Check equipment and make (or file for) repairs
e. Conduct a daily written check of equipment for safety, cleanliness, and good repair
f. Complete daily bather log and maintain aquatic records
g. Submit orders for equipment and supplies when needed, ensuring timely arrival of materials
h. Survey waterfront area daily, and keep the area free of hazards and debris
10. Participate as a member of the camp management team to plan, direct, and supervise evening programs, special events, overnights, and other all-camp activities and camp functions
a. Assist in the planning of any special events on or near the waterfront
b. Participate in management and staff meetings
c. Works with other members of the camp administrative team to conduct nightly rounds of camp property
d. Works as part of the administrative team to address emergency protocols as needed.
Equipment Used:
Rescue board, lifeguard tubes, lifejackets, back boards, buddy boards, buddy tags, canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, rowboats.
Qualifications: (Minimum Education and Experience)
- Must be 21 years of age or older (NYSDOH requirement)
- Must submit health history record and examination form prior to first day of work
- Current lifeguard certification with waterfront skills, managing lifeguard certification, Water Safety Instructor certification or willingness to get all required certifications. If you are over 21 and certified as a lifeguard, GSNENY will pay for your WSI and lifeguard supervision certifications.
- Prior experience in the development and delivery of recreational programs.
- Experience in supervising others especially peers is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understanding of the developmental needs of youth
- Ability to interact and provide instruction to campers of all age and skill levels and adults in a positive respectful manner
- Demonstrated knowledge and skill in designated camp program areas

- Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques

Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Physical requirements of a camp staff position include: the physical ability to move about camp terrain, and engage in physical activities including prolonged standing, bending, stooping, walking long distances, hiking, climbing, and stretching; requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity to manipulate outdoor equipment; requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare, and communicate appropriate camper activities/programs; Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related, and the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.; Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers. Staff must be willing to live in a rustic camp setting and work irregular hours with limited or simple equipment and facilities; and with daily exposure to the sun, heat, cold, inclement weather conditions and wildlife and insects such as bugs, mosquitos, spiders, ticks, snakes, bats, etc.
