LEADERSHIP SUMMARY

The Equine Program Assistant will infuse and model the Girl Scout Law into their everyday work to fulfill the mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Equine Program Assistant is accountable for the execution, delivery, and support of the program(s) in which they are trained. They are responsible for providing safety instructions to program participants, facilitating and / or supporting sessions, and setting up / taking down program equipment. This is a year-round, part-time position, with a flexible schedule.

MAJOR ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • Provides daily care of equine animals including, but not limited to, feeding, handling / applying medications approved by the council's veterinarian vendor, barn cleanliness and organization, and grooming.
  • Behavioral and Physical upkeep of the herd under the direction of the department manager
  • Teaches entry-level equine sessions, workshops, and trainings up to current CHA certification limits
  • Maintains Seasonal CHA Assistant certification
  • Assist in facility upkeep
  • Ensure safety checks are documented for the barn and riding equipment regularly for quality control and safety purposes
  • Attend department meetings as scheduled by managing the department
  • Adheres to property and risk management policies and procedures
  • Advocates for wilderness properties and equine opportunities with local communities
  • Meets with equine vendors on-site
  • Maintain a positive attitude and professionalism with participants, parents, volunteers, and staff

KNOWLEDGE AND CREDENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Required

  • Valid driver's license and safe driving record
  • 1 years of horsemanship experience required
  • Experience working with youth required
  • First aid, CPR, and AED certification required
  • Understanding of risk mitigations in associated departments
  • Ability to lift a minimum of 75 lbs.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, stand, and sit for extended periods
  • Ability to work outdoors in extreme temperatures for extended periods
  • Comfortable in various weather environments in relation to the Outdoor Program.
  • Preferred

  • Knowledge of Girl Scout Leadership Experience
  • Teaching or coaching experience
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Experience within a successful Equine Program
  • ABILITY AND SKILLS QUALIFICATIONS

  • Subscribes to the principles of the Girl Scout Movement
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple priorities, work independently, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong human relations skills and can work well with people of diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to exercise good judgment
  • Solution-driven with the ability to effectively solve problems
  • HOURS AND TRAVEL

  • Able to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and evenings
  • Schedules of associated departments will be sent to activity specialists to be coordinated with their supervisor.
