The community is made up of girls who have come to the US through the refugee resettlement, asylum processes or other immigration channels and over 40 countries of origin are represented. GirlForward is headquartered in Chicago, IL and operates various programs in both Chicago, IL and Austin, TX. Camp GirlForward provides a space for girls to simultaneously build their English skills while exploring their identities and learning about the world around them.
JOB DESCRIPTION
GirlForward is seeking a Teacher to join our team during our summer camp (July 7th-August 1st) in Austin, TX. This position is focused on leading our summer camp team (including staff and interns) through a 4-week direct academic program using a literacy based curriculum that explores themes of identity, community, and power through classroom instruction and field trips. Two weeks are dedicated for planning and closure of summer camp. Building relationships with the community while exploring themes of identity, power, and community are integral to success in this role. The teacher works with and reports to the Senior Program Manager to discuss weekly lesson plans, conduct daily debriefs, and confirm field trips.
Program Management 50%
- Manage day-to-day operations of the Camp GirlForward, including but not limited to:
- Teach Camp GirlForward over 4 weeks in the summer for 100 program hours.
- Review and update curriculum and lesson plans as needed
- Train, and support the camp teaching team of volunteers and interns.
- Make recommendations for program and curriculum improvement as needed
- Maintain detailed data records, including attendance, activities, curriculum, and evaluation metrics.
- Fulfill relevant administrative duties.
- Ensure work operates within the approved budget; provide financial records (receipts, invoices, etc.) when requested
Relationship Management 30%
- Build strong relationships with camp participants, intern team, and staff
- Ensure satisfaction that leads to high levels of retention.
- Assess, screen, and monitor clinical and safety concerns and provide crisis management as needed.
Leadership Collaborative Work 20%
- Collaborate with the Senior Program Manager for curriculum development, field trip excursions, and literature circle progressions
- Supervise work of camp internship team
- Participate in organization wide events.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to the mission, vision and values of GirlForward, especially a belief in the transformative power of mentoring.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 3 years of relevant experience building relationships with youth ages 14-22 and/or immigrants and refugees and experience in the nonprofit sector, education, mentoring, or youth development.
- Those with traditional or non-traditional teaching experience are strongly encouraged to apply!
- Must approach work from a critical multicultural and anti-oppression lens guided by cultural humility and a commitment to social justice.
- Must believe in the transformative power of mentoring, education, and the power of girls to create positive change in the world!
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONs
- Fluency in English is required; the Ability to communicate in Arabic, Burmese, Pashto, Dari or Swahili is a plus!

Location
Work must be performed in Austin, TX. Work is primarily performed in an office setting but also requires community-based work in Austin, TX. This role requires one to be on-site at the camp location in Austin, TX during programming hours. Programming hours during the 4-weeks of Summer camp on Monday through Thursday from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM. Every Friday, there is a scheduled field trip.
Salary: 6 weeks/$4,000 total compensation
