Position Summary:
Glenelg Country School in Ellicott City, MD seeks an Upper School Visual Arts teacher for the 2025-2026 school year. The teaching assignment will focus on studio art as well as graphic design. Demonstrated competence in materials, techniques and pedagogy is essential, as is the ability to collaborate with other members of the department in developing programs, workshops and demonstrations of student work. The successful candidate will possess a love of teens and an ability to channel their creative energy into concrete expression through inspiration, guidance and instruction. Previous teaching experience in studio art and proper maintenance of the studio are requirements. GCS is a thriving community built on the holistic development of its students, and the desire to work with adolescents in and out of the classroom is a key aspect of the job. All full-time Upper School teachers contribute to clubs and enrichment activities and advise a group of eight to ten students for their entire Upper School career. Education and Experience: A B.A., B.F.A., or B.S. is required. Experience working with middle school or high school students is a significant advantage.
Essential Functions:
  • Instruction in art and knowledge of art history through the ages
  • Knowledge of traditional mediums and basics of new technical methods
  • Creative lesson plans with a goal to introduce variety of art skills and the use of student’s personal voice
  • Clear directions of assignments and explanation of grading matrix should be also verbally explained as well as visually posted in the studio and course page on the school website.
  • Organize at least one alumni show, AP and Senior shows, as well as an outside artist exhibition with posters in all of the divisions for GCS community to see
  • Display and rotate all students’ art with an explanation for shown assignments throughout the display walls
  • Development of a sense of partnership among students and between students and the teacher
  • Assessment and evaluation of student progress
  • Implementation of teaching strategies, activities and approaches to learning
  • Exercise of good judgement and maturity
  • Supervision of student behavior and coverage of colleagues’ classes as needed

Compensation:
GCS offers competitive salary and benefits. The salary range for this position will be $50,000-70,000.
