About the Senior Technical Specialist, Gender Integration position
The Senior Technical Specialist will work closely with the Executive Director and Senior Gender Research Advisor to provide targeted expertise to partners to integrate a gender lens into programming across multiple sectors. In its outset, this position will provide technical assistance to a large international foundation to build gender considerations and gender equality outcomes into investments. Principal duties of this role include providing technical assistance in gender integration (e.g., gender analysis, development of gender action plans, design of results frameworks, etc.); designing, facilitating, and delivering training related to gender equality; and developing new tools to disseminate learnings and support partners in gender integration. The Senior Specialist will contribute to the documentation of support provided in order to track progress and capture the impact of these efforts. Priority activities for the Senior Specialist will depend on gender integration support requests from partners.
The Senior Specialist must have deep expertise integrating a gender lens in the design, implementation, and analysis of international development programs. The Senior Specialist should have deep prior experience in health and development sectors (e.g., Nutrition, Maternal and Child Health, Infectious Diseases, Health Systems Strengthening) and be willing to learn about additional sectors as needed. Strong candidates will have expertise in a broad range of quantitative and qualitative research methodologies and familiarity with either clinical product development or health service delivery as well as programming experience in the Global South. Implementation experience is not required but highly desirable.
The following is an illustrative list of tasks that will be assigned to the Senior Technical Specialist. The breakdown of duties will depend on the gender integration support requests received; it is not expected that the Specialist will complete all of these activities concurrently.
Gender Integration Technical Assistance:
- Establish a deep and evolving understanding of partners' existing gender integration strategies and organizational structure in order to ensure technical assistance is in alignment with partner needs
- Provide wrap-around technical support to strategic investments that have been identified as exemplars for gender integration.
- Provide informed, high quality, sector-specific technical assistance, including gender analysis and development of gender action plans, to support partners in gender-intentional and/or gender transformative investment and program design and implementation
- Assist partner teams to develop sector-specific M&E plans that can effectively capture progress or setbacks against gender equality goals andrpovide support during the investment and/or program evaluation phase to ensure learning from gender integration is included effectively
- Identify and advise on entry points for gender integration within investments, programs, and/or sector areas
- Provide evidence-based recommendations and design plans and conduct research as needed
- Establish and maintain strong relationships and consistent communication with key partner staff
- Contribute to internal tracking systems to track technical assistance delivery in order to systematize the Center's approach to gender integration support
- Dynamically adapt technical assistance delivery strategies based on partner feedback
Strategic Communications:
- Distill complex gender integration findings into clear, actionable insights that drive strategic decision-making, ensuring that partners understand the bottom-line impact of their gender-focused investments.
- Generate hypotheses and evidence-based recommendations to guide program design and gender integration strategies, presenting these ideas in a succinct, compelling manner that resonates with diverse stakeholders.
- Develop and deliver visually clear, compelling presentations, including complex PowerPoint decks, that effectively communicate key gender integration strategic recommendations.
- Use clear, data-driven storytelling to convey the impact of gender integration efforts, helping partners to see the value and outcomes of their investments in a way that is easy to grasp and act upon.
- Translate complex research, gender analysis, and M&E findings into concise reports and presentations tailored to different audiences, ensuring clarity and alignment with partner priorities.
Capacity Building and Tool Development:
- Design and deliver face-to-face and virtual training on gender equality and integration, using participatory and adult-learning approaches
- Facilitate face-to-face and virtual workshops for a variety of clients
- Provide one-on-one coaching support as needed to partner staff, and/or onboard new employees to gender integration approaches as needed
- Develop accompanying training tools and other materials needed to implement the training model
- Track and evaluate training program participation, learnings, and outcomes across partners where it is implemented.
- Systematize the tracking and implementation of capacity-building support to develop a replicable model for use with additional partners
Additional Responsibilities:
- Deliver presentations at conferences, events, and high-level meetings
- Manage relationships with consultants and ensure delivery of high-quality outputs
- Ensure that all gender integration support products and training models represent a clear vision, consistent message, and coherent approach to drive momentum in transformative gender equality
- Conduct site visits and work internationally and domestically as required
- All employees of NVF are required to complete timesheets.
- Manage, mentor, or support junior technical gender integration specialists as required
- Deep expertise in gender analysis, integration and mainstreaming strategies in a development context
- Proven effectiveness/track record working with or liaising with large international development foundations or other funders
- Proven ability to work with large funders and development organizations to apply an intersectional lens to gender integration across diverse bodies of work
- Experience with gender program monitoring and evaluation, including the design of tracking systems, development of indicators, and mechanisms to capture gender-sensitive and gender-transformative data
- In-depth understanding of international development processes, actors and cultures
- Comfortable in a wide range of cultural, geographic and operational situations, demonstrating culturally sensitive behavior with a diverse range of people
- Expertise in participatory, feminist adult learning theory and practice.
- Significant experience in designing and facilitating interactive meetings, workshops, and trainings
- Effective relationship-building and collaboration skills with a diverse range of partners and donors, both in-person and virtually
- Strong understanding of, and personal commitment to, a rights-based approach to gender equality and international development
- Creative problem solver with rigorous approach and aptitude for managing details in fast-paced environment
- Highly effective written and oral communication skills to address a wide variety of audiences
- Excellent planning and organizational skills
- Ability to work amidst ambiguity and thrive in a start-up mode, with initiative and comfort to work with little oversight and with team members in various locations
- Ability to multi-task and manage deadlines
Valued and Non-Essential Education, Experience, Knowledge, Skills and Ability - Advanced degree with 15 years of experience in gender integration or mainstreaming, with at least some of it serving in a location in the Global South
- Ability to work in an additional language a plus
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally to attend meetings and conduct site visits approximately 10% of the time
