About the Role:
As a Dialysis Patient Care Technician, you'll play a vital role in providing safe and effective dialysis therapy to patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. You'll work as part of a dedicated healthcare team, ensuring that patients receive high-quality care and achieve optimal outcomes.
Key Responsibilities:
- Patient Care:
- Assist with patient education regarding dialysis procedures and disease management.
- Welcome patients and assess their well-being.
- Perform vascular access cannulation and heparin administration.
- Obtain vital signs and evaluate vascular access before and after treatment.
- Initiate and monitor dialysis treatments according to prescribed orders.
- Respond to intradialytic problems and provide appropriate interventions.
- Discontinue dialysis treatments and evaluate patients for discharge.
- Document patient information accurately and timely.
- Report any significant changes in patient's condition to the registered nurse or supervisor.
- Observe patients and conduct machine safety checks.
- Perform interventions for unusual patient status and document responses.
- Monitor vascular access during treatment and provide appropriate interventions.
- Obtain and prepare laboratory specimens.
- Ensure proper cleaning and disinfection of equipment.
- Assist with patient self-care under RN supervision.
- Team Collaboration:
- Assist with training of new staff members under the supervision of a nurse.
- Follow organizational policies and procedures.
- Maintain a clean and safe working environment.
- Prepare for dialysis treatments and perform machine testing.
- Initiate the Solution Delivery System (SDS).
- Quality Improvement:
- Participate in Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.
- Enter treatment data into the clinical application accurately and timely.
- Review treatment sheets for completeness and accuracy.
- Prepare patient charts and paperwork.
- Prepare and handle laboratory specimens.
- Ensure proper collection of lab specimens.
- Infection Control:
- Assist with infection control audits.
- Adhere to infection control practices.
- Participate in infection control education for patients and families.
- Transitional Care Unit:
- Follow new patients through their first 4 weeks of dialysis.
- Reinforce education and care matters.
- Liaise with FKC staff members for coordinated care.
- Assist with patient understanding of home dialysis.
- Set up and perform treatments on TCU machines.
- Assist with patient understanding of treatment options.
- Coordinate transition to the patient's chosen modality.
- Assist with supply ordering and inventory.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED.
- At least 1 year of dialysis patient care technician experience in the last 2 years.
- CMS-approved state and/or national certification requirements.
- Appropriate state licensure, education, and training.
- Demonstrated commitment to organizational culture, values, and customer service.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and move patients and equipment.
- Frequent standing and bending.
- Ability to push and pull equipment.
- Ability to lift and lower solutions.
