The Principal Manufacturing Engineer will lead the effort to define test requirements; implement test and manufacturing procedures from NPI to MP; maintain the line in a production facility; and define and implement continuous improvement efforts, working with Globalstar’s offshore contract manufacturing partners for both consumer and industrial satellite communication products.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Provide technical leadership
- Work collaboratively with product development teams to design, develop, validate, implement, and improve test manufacturing processes, tooling, fixtures, and software
- Work with systems and other engineers to define manufacturing test requirements for products, including both hardware and software testing
- Turn manufacturing test requirements into detailed test cases and plans
- Lead effort to implement test cases and plans; drive vendor selection for tooling and fixtures; select and oversee vendors and internal teams implementing test procedures and equipment
- Collaborate with EMS partners to set AQL sampling methods and procedures
- Lead root cause analysis of failed and defective products and WIP; specify production flows including disposition of failed components/subassemblies/products
- Determine requirements and lead integration efforts for manufacturing, labeling, database, and other back-end software
- Maintain production lines from NPI through EOL, for both CM partners and ODM/JDM
- Mentor and provide technical leadership to junior engineers; act as a key subject matter expert and go-to reference for the team
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact clearly and concisely with all technical departments and levels of management including offshore engineers, technicians, and operators
- Knowledge of manufacturing test methodologies and procedures, including all of ICT, AOI, AXI, boundary scan, and functional test
- Strong knowledge of statistics and ability to set AQL with EMS partners
- Strong fundamentals of RF test knowledge
- Test automation frameworks and software implementation; some experience with DevOps preferred
- Able to translate EMS DFx requirements and guidelines into actionable requirements by design team, and verify compliance
- Able and enthusiastic to directly deal with EMS partner employees to drive product delivery, resolve line-down issues, improve yield and throughput
- Excellent organizational skills with attention-to-detail
- Ability to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to effectively manage time and prioritize tasks
- Ability to act with integrity, professionalism, and confidentiality
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Familiarity with NetSuite
- Bachelor’s degree (BS) from four-year college or university in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field; Master’s preferred
- 15 years industry experience; 20 years strongly preferred; prefer previous experience as a team lead or manager
- Experience working directly with or alongside Tier-1 Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) companies such as Jabil, Flex, Foxconn, Celestica, Compal, Pegatron, or similar; prefer additional experience with medium-to-high mix EMS companies
- Experience working directly with or alongside Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) and JDMs with offshore design teams and manufacturing facilities
- Manufacturing experience (as an engineer employed by an ODM, EMS, or OEM company) producing products with RF subsystems; strongly prefer experience with RF outside of BLE, WiFi, Zigbee, NFC, and GNSS
- Experience bringing new products from concept through NPI to MP
- Significant experience specifying, designing, implementing, debugging, and maintaining test fixtures and procedures that use RF
- Experience specifying, designing, implementing, debugging, and maintaining test fixtures for In-Circuit Test (ICT) using both bed-of-nails and flying probe
- Background with Lean Sigma/Six Sigma or similar
- Familiarity with test equipment from vendors such as Teradyne, Keysight, Rohde & Schwarz
- If not located local to Globalstar’s office in Covington, Louisiana, willingness and ability to travel to Covington as needed (estimated at 25%)
- Willing and able to travel internationally to manufacturing facilities, including but not limited to Vietnam, China, and others
