Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is an exciting independent marine research institute addressing critical challenges facing our oceans, human health, and the environment through innovative scientific research and education. Genomic technologies provide an unprecedented opportunity to explore and understand the ocean’s vast biodiversity, promote sustainable and healthy oceans, and inspire new discoveries that impact human health. GMGI is looking for an innovative Scientist using data-driven approaches to advance our understanding of marine organisms and ecosystems. We are especially interested in the application of AI and other advanced computational techniques to mine datasets for biomarkers that confer resilience in shellfish. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated success as a driving force in advancing innovative research and an interest in translating discoveries into applied outcomes in conservation, fisheries, or human health.
Responsibilities:
· Lead research projects related to identifying molecular drivers of disease and/or environmental resilience traits
· Develop and apply novel computational approaches (e.g. AI, systems level modeling, advanced statistical approaches) to complex genomic or multi-omic data sets
· Utilize comparative ‘omics approaches in meta-analyses to identify resilience biomarkers within and across marine species
· Contribute to the development of new computational approaches that enhance the analysis and interpretation of data for ongoing research projects
· Clearly and efficiently communicate project results to a variety of audiences, including project collaborators and the general public
· Lead the publication of results in peer-reviewed scientific journals and present research findings at scientific conferences
· Contribute to grant proposals, institutional fund-raising activities and community outreach activities
· Contribute to GMGI’s commitment to create a science community on Cape Ann
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in Genomics, Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Genetics, or a related field
- Experience in omics data analysis for identifying molecular drivers of traits in marine organisms
- Experience in comparative genomics
· Strong computational skills and experience with common bioinformatic and statistic software packages for analyzing genomic data
· Programming experience with commonly used languages for biological data analysis (e.g. Python, R, Bash)
· Knowledge of advanced statistical techniques and concepts
· Experience using a variety of AI techniques (clustering, decision trees, artificial neural networks, etc.)
- Strong publication record and a capacity to conduct innovative, high-quality research
- History of success as a driving force in research projects and experience in attaining external funding to support research activities
- Self-starting, independent, creative thinker with strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and teamwork skills
- Demonstrated record of leadership, integrity and flexibility
· Enthusiasm and commitment to GMGI’s mission for science and education
This position will report to the Climate Resilience Research Scientist.
