Research Scientist, Division of Oceans and Human Health
The Gloucester Marine Genomics Institute (GMGI) is an exciting independent research institute, addressing critical challenges facing our oceans, human health, and the environment through innovative scientific research and education. GMGI is looking for an innovative Scientist to join our expanding Oceans and Human Health Division with a focus on aging biology and healthy longevity. Our goal is to unlock the secrets of extended lifespan and healthy aging by studying the biology of exceptionally long-lived marine animals, translating insights into interventions that promote human healthspan and combat age-related diseases. Scientific themes include fundamental mechanisms of longevity and negligible senescence with emphasis on neuroprotective, immune resilience, and cancer resistance mechanisms.
The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, excellent communication skills, and an interest in translating research discoveries to improve human health. This position is an extraordinary opportunity for a dynamic and entrepreneurial scientist to contribute to building a world-class research institute.
Responsibilities:
- Lead an independent research program using advanced molecular, cellular, and computational technologies to uncover mechanisms of healthy longevity
- Use novel animal models to identify potential targets to promote healthy aging and interventions for age-related disease
- Establish collaborations with leading academic, non-profit, and industry partners to advance research objectives
- Lead efforts to identify new funding opportunities and secure external funding to expand research activities
- Work closely with the Science Director to define research priorities and strategies to aggressively grow the Oceans and Human Health Division
- Support and develop postdoctoral scientists, research associates, and student interns through effective supervision, mentoring, and performance management
- Assist in fund-raising efforts for the institution, give presentations to stakeholders, donors and general audiences
Qualifications:
- Ph.D. with 3 years of research experience
- Established reputation in aging research, neuroscience, immunology, oncology, or related field
- Strong computational skills and experience analyzing ‘omics data sets
- Strong publication record in high-impact journals representing innovative, high-quality research
- History of success as a driving force in research projects and success in obtaining awarded grants to support research activities
- Ability to interact and work across disciplines and to function in an entrepreneurial environment
- Excellent judgment, interpersonal and communication skills, and commitment to high ethical standards
- Excellent teamwork skills for success in a collaborative and dynamic environment
This position will report to the Science Director.
Salary commensurate with experience.
