Summary/Objective: Glow Networks is currently seeking Tier 1 Network Operations Center Technicians to support optical network communications, monitoring, support, diagnosis, resolution and coordination with specialized support groups. As a NOC Technician, you will use several network monitoring tools to ensure the viability of the client’s network, while responding to a variety of hardware and software issues. You will be responsible for monitoring and responding to optical network alarms. Candidates with experience working with telecommunications network equipment will be given priority.

Essential Functions:

  • Monitor and respond to optical network alarms
  • Collect data on optical and IP network elements and input to regularly scheduled reports
  • Review MOPS to understand customer equipment maintenance procedures
  • Open bridges during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance activities
  • Open trouble tickets and thoroughly document system faults and troubleshooting steps
  • Escalate to Tier 2 for attention and resolution; track and document problem resolution
  • Use effective written and verbal communication in order to resolve complex system problems

Job Role:

  • PSE will meet remotely the identified, assigned VZ NOC engineers to review alarms, review questions, provide guidance to them on how to resolve their issues. Assist as needed. “Meet remotely” is defined as 2 Teams meetings per week on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am EST.
  • On demand support request (i.e. circuit rerouting assistance, etc.) is scheduled as best effort through the VZ PM.
  • Assigned PSE to travel to Cary once every 3 weeks – Travel in Tuesday morning, depart Thursday afternoon – to work with assigned 2 VZ NOC engineers face to face.
  • Once a permanent resource is hired (Cary, NC based), the assigned PSE trains the new hire and will integrate the new hire into the NOC environment.
  • Assigned PSE oversees/trains/assists/evaluates the new hire and the 2 assigned VZ NOC Engineers with duties below.
  • Continue to meet remotely with 2 identified, assigned VZ NOC engineers to review alarms, review questions, provide guidance to them on how to resolve their issues. Assist as needed. “Meet remotely” is defined as 2 Teams meetings on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 9am EST.
  • On demand support request (i.e. circuit rerouting assistance, etc.) is still scheduled as best effort through VZ PM.

Other Functions:

  • Troubleshoot faults on in-service and/or out-of-service optical network elements
  • Develop a working knowledge of IP networking, routers, switches, etc.
  • Use network monitoring tools such as Solarwinds and alarm browsers to monitor networks.
  • Understanding of essential programming structures and data types.
  • Use MS Office suite, especially Word and Excel, proprietary software for creation of reports.

Required Education/Experience and Competencies:

  • Superior, verbal and written, English language comm skills are required.
  • Self-sufficient, able to troubleshoot optical networking problems.
  • Exhibit a “can-do” attitude towards solving network problems.
  • Ability to multitask and juggle several complex issues.
  • One to Five years’ experience in network operations support is desired.
  • Experience working with ISP’s and Carriers is desired.
  • Vocational Network Technician Training is desired.
  • Two years’ experience with Telecommunications, DWDM and/or SONET optical networking equipment in a NOC or field technician capacity is desired.
  • Must study, learn and demonstrate a good understanding of DWDM, SONET, Optical Mesh Networking.
  • Study of Infinera, Cisco, ALU or other optical network elements is required.
  • Must master NOC procedures, fault isolation, and service restoration techniques.
  • CCNA or CCENT, A , Network , etc., is a bonus.
  • Follow trouble-shooting procedures to isolate and correct network faults.
  • Understand the use of single mode and multi-mode fiber, and various connector types.
