CLASSIFICATION TITLE: LIFEGUARD
PURPOSE OF CLASSIFICATION
The purpose of this classification is to supervise activities in swimming areas at pool/beach facilities to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
Supervises all areas of pool/beach facilities designated for swimming; ensures compliance with all applicable rules, regulations, laws, standards, policies and procedures.
Monitors safety and welfare of swimmers and other individuals; ensures adherence to established safety guidelines; cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas, conditions, or activities; initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
Monitors/supervises activities of all individuals using pool/beach facilities and identifies inappropriate actions; handles situations involving excessive noise, disruptive behavior, potential violence, or other problems; monitors crowd activities and initiates crowd control as needed; takes appropriate disciplinary action to maintain a peaceful environment.
Conducts and/or assists with water rescues of swimmers in danger of drowning; administers first aid as needed; obtains emergency medical assistance when necessary.
Coordinates medical/rescue activities with emergency medical personnel.
Operates and maintains all issued lifeguard equipment, which may include a motor vehicle, wave runner, rescue board, rescue tube, first aid supplies, pool vacuum, wet/dry vacuum, pressure washer, blower, pool chemical testing kits, hand tools, or telephone.
Reports all accidents or injuries; completes accident/incident reports and submits to supervisor.
Inspects/monitors pool/beach grounds to identify potential hazards, such as broken glass, protruding nails on boardwalk, broken/loose steps, missing boards, or other situations which may cause injury to swimmers.
Performs various maintenance tasks associated with pool/beach facilities, which may include testing pool water to ensure proper chemical levels, recording daily pool chemical readings, vacuuming/cleaning pools, vacuuming showers, cleaning/blowing pool decks, or making minor repairs to correct pool/beach safety hazards.
Monitors inventory of equipment and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new/replacement materials.
Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, accident/incident reports, supply requisitions, checklists, or other documents.
Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, first aid guidelines/policies, CPR procedures, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, swimmers, the public, emergency medical providers, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
Maintains a comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures; maintains an awareness of methods, trends, and advances in the profession; maintains professional affiliations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
High school diploma or GED; supplemented by vocational/technical training in lifeguard procedures, swimming, first aid, and CPR; supplemented by 2 months previous experience and/or training involving lifeguard training, swimming, first aid, and CPR; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. Must possess and maintain valid Certified Lifeguard, First Aid, & CPR for the Professional Rescuer certification from the American Red Cross. Operation of a motor vehicle requires possess and maintenance of a valid drivers license.
