Library Director Duties

-Collection Management:

-Organization of books on the shelf and straightening shelves

-Selecting and ordering new books from Baker & Taylor for the library within spending budget budget

-Process books with barcode and label

-Repair library materials

-Weeding and removal

-Inventory books when necessary.

-Inter-Library Loan:

-outbound: finding book requested, processing and preparing the book for courier or USPS.

-inbound: Request the material from another library in Koha, receive from the Post Office or courier, process the book as received into the Koha system or ShareIT, contacting patron for pick-up and checking out. Upon return, processed through the Koha or ShareIT and transfer to the Post Office or courier for shipment.

-Post office receipts get filed for records

-Record courier items and record monthly stats

Programming:

-Planning Preschool Storytime (Fridays September-April 10-10:30 am)

-selecting age appropriate books to read aloud to the kids

-keeping them engaged in the book by asking questions

-prior to their visit, preparing all the necessary supplies to complete an age appropriate craft

-teaching them how to create the craft during their visit to the library and sending it home with them.

-helping caregivers find books that interest the child and the caregiver.

-Planning Elementary School visits (May each year)

-Kindergarten through 5 grade, each grade visits separately at a scheduled time as preferred by the teachers.

-Selecting age appropriate books to read aloud to the kids, keeping them engaged in the book by asking questions or having them help read the book aloud.

- Promote the summer reading program with handouts, story and show of prizes and crafts if possible.

-Plan the Storywalk books

- Select the books and help process them for the signs. Purchase books and process them This may include lamination and the creation of additional signs. Use the golf cart to put in the display boxes along the sidewalk. Providing an occasional Take&Make kit.

-Summer Reading Program

- Start planning for next year’s summer reading program in October

-includes but not limited to: Letter writing to local businesses to solicit prizes or financial support, Writing of a program grant and/or community grant. Planning for crafts or activities, ensuring the library has all the supplies needed for crafts and activities. Researching for best prices for supplies and prizes. Purchasing needed supplies and prizes. Displaying prizes in the library during the Summer Reading Program months. Creating a flyer to advertise the Summer Reading Program to the community and school. Implementing the Summer Reading Program, find volunteers (teens) to help with craft time and shelving.

-Keep track of attendance during activities and the total amount of children that sign up for the Summer Reading Program evaluation at the end of the summer

-Genealogy Meetings

-4th Monday of the month.

-The museum plans and provides programming. Assist with the set up and digital projector. Schedule the meetings and reserve the room on the city calendar.

-Family or Adult programing

- Look for needs and opportunities for programming such as the trip to Maxwell Game Preserve.

-Grants:

Grants available through NCKLS yearly:

-Programming (worth $300) can be used towards Summer Reading programming or performer (author, speaker, magician, singer, etc)

-Technology Grant (up to $1000) computer equipment

-Service Improvement Grant (up to $1000) can be used towards items to improve the library (except for supplies/consumables: paper, pens, markers, staples, folders, ect..)

-Collections Grant (based on population) to improve local collection. For physical items (books, movies)

-Courier Grant (NCKLS pays 80% of total cost) for resource sharing and ILL

-Digital Resources grant ($1500) platform fee for Sunflower elibrary

-Continuing Education Grant ($500 max per library) development and training of library staff

-Per Capita grant (based on population) funds to meet state standards

Director duties-Evaluating the needs of the library and deciding what is the best affordable route for each grant, each year. Researching the best price for each item. Preparing and present grant for board approval Submitting grant to NCKLS. Purchasing items with grant money and compile report of spending. When items arrive at the library, assemble the items and place in the library with assistance if needed from NCKLS staff. Complete grant evaluation.

Community Foundation Grant

-Filing open early February - early March. Brainstorm ideas and request funding.

Continuing Education:

-attend Director Meetings in person or online with NCKLS, record information to keep at the library for later references

-Register for and attend continuing education classes in person or online with NCKLS, record information to keep at the library for later references

Social Media and online presence:

-maintaining a social media presence on Facebook and Library website

-creating posts for the library to keep the community informed of activities happening at the library and posting pictures of the new books arriving at the library for checkout.

-Creating a webpage for the library using program Elementor Page Builder in WordPress (paid for by NCKLS) to provide access to all information about the library including: online access to our book database, hours, location, activities and upcoming events at the library.

-Community:

-Assists customers in the use of library services, materials and information resources.

-Create communication through flyers, social media, website and creating displays

Maintaining the library:

-Maintains the facility in a neat and attractive appearance; decorates the library for special occasions and informational items.

-Keep the board informed of any repairs the library needs.

-Use of regional and state library services to provide an appropriate stock of library materials to serve the needs of all library patrons. Selects and orders all books, materials, and equipment.

Other:

-Prepares the agenda and attends board meetings throughout the year to present and discuss the needs of the library to the board members. Keeps Board meeting records on file at the library.

-Maintains the Library Policy Manual, the GAAP Waiver and new board member information, Loyalty Oath and Conflict of Interest. Is responsible for staying current on membership agreements and Memorandum of understanding - for example with the Sunflower eLibrary and etc.

-Prepares an annual budget for the library in consultation with the Board.

-Hire, train, evaluate and fire library staff.

-Proctor exams as needed (usually Hutch Com. College)

-Maintains accurate financial, personnel, patron, and statistical records and submits a variety of monthly and annual reports for the Board, NCKLS and the State Library of Kansas.

  • Willingness to maintain skills in above mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate library skills learning experiences.

Physical Demands of Position:

  • Talking and hearing; Use of telephone.
  • Lifting and carrying 50 pounds or less.
  • Handling, processing, picking up and shelving books.
  • Fingering: typing, writing, filing, sorting, shelving, and processing.
  • Pushing and pulling objects weighing 60-80 pounds on wheels.
  • Mobility: travel to meetings outside the library/town.

Mental Requirements

  • Communication skills: effectively communicate ideas and information both in written and oral form.
  • Reading ability: effectively read and understand information contained in memoranda, reports and bulletins, etc.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions: effectively follow instructions from library board, verbally and in written form.
  • Mathematical ability: calculate basic arithmetic problems (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division).
  • Time management: set priorities in order to meet assignment deadlines.

Environmental Working Conditions

  • Inside and outside work environment.
  • Flexible work hours, frequent evening and weekend hours.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree preferred. High school diploma or GED required.
  • Keyboarding and general office experience.
  • Computer literacy and competency.
  • Proficient in email, word processing, spreadsheets,
