Assistant Director
Reports To: Library Director
Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Director, the Assistant Director aids and supports the management, supervision, and administration of the Library in order to provide quality services and resources to the community.
Essential Functions:
● Assists with hiring, performance evaluations, and mentoring of staff.
● Supports the Director in the development of library policies and procedures.
● Assists in the development and training of staff and volunteers.
● Schedules and supervises the library staff in the Director’s absence.
● Promotes library services and programs within the Library and the community.
● Evaluates information sources and advises patrons as needed.
● Participates in the selection, acquisition, evaluation, and weeding of library materials.
● Attends professional meetings, workshops, and classes.
● Helps implement changes in policies and procedures.
● Plans, organizes, and implements special projects as needed or determined by the Director.
● Provides leadership in working relationships and communication, ensuring high productivity and quality public service; encourages initiative and creativity.
● Addresses patron inquiries and concerns, promoting a welcoming environment for all library visitors.
● Ensures safe conditions for staff, public, and building operation taking appropriate action in emergencies.
● Completes circulation tasks as needed including processing, shelving, ILL requests, patron cards and copies, etc.
● Provides readers’ advisory for patrons.
● Helps maintain the Library’s technology and web presence including social media.
● Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
● Knowledge and understanding of the principles and practices of public libraries.
● Knowledge of public administration as applied to a public library.
● Ability to administer the activities of a public library and to supervise the work of others.
● Ability to establish and maintain successful working relationships with superiors, subordinates, city officials, directors of other agencies, and the general public.
● Ability to articulate thoughts and express ideas effectively using oral, written and non-verbal communication skills.
● Ability to interact courteously and efficiently with Library staff and volunteers, business contacts, town employees, and the general public.
● Possess computer knowledge including the ability to utilize Microsoft Office Programs, social media, website content managers, Gmail, and Google Drive.

Education and Training
● 3-5 years public library experience preferred.
● Bachelor’s degree required.
Hours and Compensation:
This is considered a full-time position, 40 hrs a week. Current hours include M-TH 9:30am-6pm, Friday 9am-5pm with some flexibility. As a management position, this role will require some after-hours availability by phone for scheduling issues/building emergencies. Evening and weekend work is rare, but may be required on occasion due to coverage needs/meetings.
Starting pay range is $18.50-$21.50 an hour, dependent upon education and experience.
Position includes vacation, sick, and holiday time benefits; enrollment in KPERS, the state retirement program; and health insurance.
