DEFINITION: Under general direction, plans, supervises and participates in the custodial maintenance of a school plant and district offices and buildings; performs other related duties as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Essential Duties
Sweeps, mops, scrubs and waxes floors.
Cleans restrooms.
Dusts, waxes, washes and polishes all furniture and woodwork.
Sweeps sidewalks, outside areas and paved areas.
Washes windows, adjusts desks, arranges furniture and equipment for instructional purposes and special activities.
May assist with heavy work in cafeteria.
Participates in routine cleaning, sweeping, pickups, and maintenance of the school plant.
May make minor or emergency repairs and report the need for other repairs.
Empties garbage and trash cans.
Requisitions needed custodial supplies and equipment.
Inspects building and grounds for vandalism.
Performs special custodial work when requested.
Controls stray cats and dogs.
Maintains grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Other Duties
Assists the principal in vandalism reduction education and prevention.
Keeps informed of current methods, practices, regulations and guidelines pertaining to school plant operation and maintenance.
Performs other related duties as may be assigned.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
Physical, mental, and emotional stamina to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position manual dexterity sufficient to write, use the telephone and machines: vision sufficient to read printed materials; hearing sufficient to communication in person and hold telephone conversations; speaking ability in an understandable voice with sufficient volume to be heard in normal conversation distance on the telephone and addressing groups; physical agility to push/pull, squat, twist, turn, bend, stoop, and to reach overhead: physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (office, district, school site to site), drive an automobile, and to respond to emergency situations; physical strength sufficient to lift 45 pounds alone or more with assistance; physical stamina sufficient to sit, stand or walk for prolonged periods of time; physical tolerance to be exposed to dust, pollen, specific chemicals and cleansers; mental acuity to collect and interpret data, evaluate, reason, define problems, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, make valid judgements and decisions.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
Completion of formal or informal education sufficient to assure the ability to read and write English at the level required for successful job performance.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience as a custodian.
Knowledge of:
Methods, materials and equipment used in custodial work.
Requirements for maintaining school buildings and grounds in a safe, clean and orderly condition.
Ability to:
Maintain cooperative relationships with school personnel, students and the public.
Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
Use heavy industrial buffers and other equipment.
Maintain schedules for cleaning of assigned areas.
License:
Valid California Drivers License
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS
Experience and/or ability to work with linguistically and culturally diverse groups.
Ability to speak Spanish in addition to English.
