This position assists the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney in providing legal representation and counsel to the Board of Supervisors, County Administration, Constitutional Officers, and County boards, commissions, and committees.
This position has the potential for a hybrid telework schedule of up to 2 days per week.Graduation from a law school of recognized standing.
• Minimum of three years of experience as a practicing attorney.
• Must be licensed to practice law in the Commonwealth of Virginia and in good standing with the Virginia State Bar.
• Real estate knowledge and experience are strongly preferred.
• Experience in local government law is preferred but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work is sedentary work, which requires exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Tasks may require the ability to walk or stand for prolonged periods of time. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions.

- Under the supervision of the County Attorney and Deputy County Attorney, will advise the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, and other County boards, commissions, agencies, and departments and employees of each.
- Assists with the drafting and review of contracts, deeds, easements, ordinances, resolutions, legal opinions, pleadings, research memoranda, and other documents.
- Will have the opportunity to manage client relationships with departmental clients independently as well as meet with the County Administrator and other senior county staff to provide legal advice and consultation under the supervision of the County Attorney.
- Although not a primary duty, occasionally may need to attend meetings of the Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission.
- Represents the County in legal matters, brings code enforcement actions or other suits necessary to be instituted by the County principally in General District Court.
- Assists in the defense of the County in suits brought against it.
- Presents matters, including proposed ordinances, to the Board of Supervisors, the Planning Commission, and other boards as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Knowledge of and experience in real estate matters, including property transfers, deeds, and easements strongly preferred.
- Knowledge of procurement, contracts, finance, code enforcement, Freedom of Information Act, and local government law would be helpful.
- Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, practices, and references utilized in legal research.
- Knowledge of standard office procedures, practices, and equipment.
- Ability to present complex ideas effectively orally and in writing to professional and lay persons.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with County officials, court officials, members of the bar, and citizens.
- Ability to occasionally appear in general district court.
