Job Description
The Medication Assistant (MA) role serves as a caregiver who provides resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents under the supervision of a charge nurse. This includes assisting with basic health care needs, such as bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, obtaining and recording vital signs, and providing psycho-social support.
The MA also assists with transferring, re-positioning, and walking using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment. They complete tasks related to food preparation and dining, creating a positive experience for residents. Additionally, they administer prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations.
Required Skills and Qualifications
A high school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) is preferred but not required. Minimum age of 18 is preferred, and prior clinical or nursing assistant experience is also desirable. The successful candidate must satisfactorily complete yearly department-specific competency testing and maintain a record of continuing education credits.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing is required in some states.
- Completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course is necessary once CNA certification is obtained.
