Responsibilities and Qualifications
The Medication Assistant role involves providing resident-centered nursing care and daily living assistance to assigned residents. Key responsibilities include assisting with basic health care needs, administering medications, and completing tasks related to food preparation and dining.
- Assist with bathing, toileting, grooming, dressing/undressing, and obtaining and recording vital signs.
- Provide psycho-social support and other personal care to assigned residents.
- Transfer, re-position, and walk residents using correct and appropriate transfer techniques and equipment.
- Administer prescribed medications as delegated by a licensed nurse and within their scope of practice as defined by state regulations.
- Document outcomes related to resident care, medication administration, behavior, activity, and dietary.
Requirements
A high school graduate or general equivalency diploma (GED) is preferred but not required. Minimum age of 18 is preferred, and prior clinical or nursing assistant experience is also desirable.
- Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification with the State Board of Nursing is required in some states.
- Completion of a state-approved Certified Medication Aide/Assistant course is necessary once CNA certification is obtained.
