Job Summary
The nursing director administers the nursing program in a long-term care facility to maintain standards of resident care. They facilitate the optimization of the geriatric care process to improve the quality and efficiency of service. The nursing director is responsible for the overall quality of care provided by the organization's nursing personnel. They advise medical staff, department heads, and administrators in matters related to nursing service and strategies. The nursing director interprets policies and objectives of nursing service to staff and community groups. They monitor the operations of the nursing staff and ensure compliance with regulations on organizational and governmental standards and practices.
Duties and Responsibilities
The nursing director has overall responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the long-term care facility. This includes quality of resident care, program/care management, environmental safety, budget constraints, and responding to identified needs to ensure regulatory compliance. The nursing director performs necessary delegation and coordination for clinical, operational, and managerial activities to accomplish the objectives of the department. They effectively manage and direct the work of individuals or teams.
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in nursing is preferred but not required. Graduation from a nationally accredited nursing program is also preferred. Five years of nursing experience are required. Housing with Services, housing and urban development (HUD), and/or assisted living experience are helpful. A thorough knowledge of the nursing practice act and standards of nursing care, as well as a working knowledge of administrative and management techniques, are necessary. The nursing director must currently hold an unencumbered RN license with the State Board of Nursing where the practice of nursing is occurring and/or possess multistate licensure if in a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) state.
