Spray Gun Operator

Position Summary

The Spray Gun Operator will perform operations to mix, prepare for and spray a mixture of resin, catalyst and fiberglass over molds, patterns or forms to produce and form laminated fiberglass parts.

Essential Functions and Basic Duties

Assumes responsibility for ensuring molds are ready for fiberglass and gelcoat application.

  • Visually check molds for needed repairs.
  • Wax mold if needed using cloths or sponges.
  • Check tanks for required resins and catalysts.
  • Adjust mixture of resins and catalyst according to standard charts to obtain required curing time.
  • Check pressure to ensure all fluid tips are open.
  • Spray mold with gelcoat, if required to specified thickness.
  • Prepare gelcoat in advance, to chart specifications, adding drying agent in proper amount to achieve curing time as specified.

Assumes responsibility for fiberglass application and associated operations.

  • Responsible for inspecting molds for proper gelcoat setup and arrange to spray glass.
  • Ensure all hoses are attached to bulk containers and to spray gun.
  • Feed fiberglass roving through overhead pulleys into attachment on air gun. Operate valve which allows roving to be fed through rotary knife, which cuts roving into specified lengths as the catalyst and resin are sprayed on cover form with fiberglass mixture to a specified depth.
  • Ensure all air bubbles are smoothed out using metal roller.
  • Ensure complete bonding of the fiberglass with the resin in the form.
  • Remove form from spray area and place in curing area.
  • Responsible for removing excess flash from form.
  • After curing is completed, use thin beveled steel bars inserted between the form and the fiberglass covering.
  • Remove from the mold and place in area for removal to grinding room.

Assumes responsibility for proper operation and maintenance of equipment and cleanup of work area.

  • Perform minor maintenance of equipment.
  • Perform routine cleaning of spray gun with special solvent as need and check operation of spray gun, pressure and pattern daily by spraying specified amounts of resin, catalyst, under specified pressure on cardboard to determine proper function according to standards.
  • Keep work area in a clean and orderly condition.
  • Notify supervisor of inoperative equipment or defective material.
  • Move materials as necessary in the performance of duties.

Assumes responsibility for foam application and associated operations.

  • Pull and prep a variety of parts to be foamed.
  • Ensure that foam machine is oiled and drums are vented, periodic checks of parts A&B foam drums to be made that will insure proper application.
  • Responsible for maintaining 1” of foam on all parts.
  • Ensure that all part have been properly trimmed and cleaned after foaming operation.

Assumes responsibility for proper documentation and communication with supervisor.

  • Maintain, record time, production or other required information on proper forms.
  • Observe all safety rules and regulations.
  • Perform other similar or related duties as assigned or directed.

Education/Certification
High School Graduate or equivalent.

Experience Required

Previous experience working in a manufacturing environment and/or paint experience a plus.

Required Knowledge
General knowledge of operation of manufacturing equipment and processes.

Skills/Abilities

Physical Activities and Requirements of this Position

Ability to lift 20-40 pounds throughout the workday.

Working Conditions

Work performed is in a typical manufacturing environment.

Temperature and humidity levels in the work environment will fluctuate.

Noise levels in the work environment will fluctuate.
