What are the responsibilities and job description for the Assistant Professor of Biology position at Goucher College?
Job Description :
Since its founding in 1885, Goucher College has been a place of innovation and excellence. As a private, non-profit liberal arts college of approximately 1,000 undergraduate and 600 graduate students, Goucher is dedicated to teaching students to become complex problem-solvers prepared for the jobs of the future. Small class sizes, a rigorous curriculum, and dedicated faculty and staff allow for personalized mentorship of each student. Named one of the most innovative colleges in the country by U.S. News & World Report, Goucher is a leader in global education and was one of the first, and remains one of the only, colleges in the U.S. to provide 100% of its students with the opportunity to study abroad at no additional charge.
The Department of Biological Sciences at Goucher College invites applications for a tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of Biology starting in August 2025. We are looking for a broadly trained microbiologist with expertise in environmental microbiology. Teaching responsibilities will include an intermediate microbiology course that is a core course in the biology curriculum. Additional courses include courses for non-majors, an upper-level molecular or cellular course, team-teaching introductory biology courses, and contributing to the Environmental Studies major. The total teaching load is 20 contact hours per year. Candidates will also be responsible for developing a lab-based research program that includes undergraduates. Goucher has a long-running summer research program that is internally funded and helps support faculty-led research in the natural sciences.
The biological sciences program is designed to provide broad training in the biological sciences for our students who pursue teaching, non-profit, research, health, and other careers. We have scaffolded development and assessment of students' writing and laboratory skills throughout our curriculum. Our introductory biology courses employ promising practices shown to engage and retain students, particularly students who identify as first-generation and those from backgrounds that have been historically excluded from the sciences. For example, course-based undergraduate research experiences are built-in throughout the curriculum. Additionally, our department provides biology instruction to Goucher's post-baccalaureate pre-medical program, one of the oldest and best of its kind in the nation.
