Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to join our team, specializing in excavation and utilities projects. The ideal candidate will have experience operating various types of heavy machinery, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to work collaboratively on construction sites.
Key Responsibilities:
- Operate heavy equipment such as excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, and loaders to perform tasks including reading and setting elevations, grading, digging, and lifting materials.
- Conduct pre-operational checks to ensure equipment is safe and in good working condition. Report equipment malfunctions or concerns to the supervisor ensuring that repairs are schedule promptly
- Assist in site preparation, including grading, excavation, and leveling for construction projects.
- Ability to distinguish between properties, types, and moisture content of soils.
- Transport materials and equipment as needed across the job site.
- Perform site preparation, trenching, and grading to create foundations for utilities installation, ensuring proper depth and alignment.
- Assist in the installation of water, sewer, and stormwater drainage systems by digging trenches and managing equipment for pipe laying
- Follow all safety protocols and regulations to minimize risk and ensure a safe working environment.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings and communicate effectively with ground crew.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment, including cleaning and lubrication, and report any mechanical issues or needed repairs to supervisors.
- Work closely with other crew members to coordinate tasks and ensure efficient project progress.
- Assist in training new operators and laborers on equipment operation and safety practices.
- Keep accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance, and project progress.
- Assist ground crews when needed.
- Maintain clean equipment and work area.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Proven minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Heavy Equipment Operator, preferred in excavation and utilities work.
- Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 75 lbs) and perform physical tasks for extended periods.
- Strong understanding of safety practices related to construction and excavation.
- Prefer ability to read and interpret blueprints and project specifications.
- Strong work ethic and reliability.
- Ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively.
- Willingness to learn and take on new challenges.
Working Conditions:
- Work is performed outdoors in various weather conditions.
- Must be able to stand, walk, and use hands for extended periods.
- May require working in confined spaces or at heights.
- Construction sites may be noisy, dirty, and require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Must always adhere to all safety regulations and protocols.
- Often requires lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling items.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing within normal range
- Requires reaching, crawling, climbing, grasping, kneeling, squatting and twisting.
