SOCIAL STUDIES TEACHER, FULL-TIME CERTIFIED POSITION FOR 2025-2026
10-MONTH POSITION (200 DAYS)
Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International Studies is a regional magnet program for gifted high school students. Teachers at MLWGS plan, organize, and implement appropriate instruction for a gifted program that guides and encourages students to develop and fulfill their academic potential.
Qualifications:
- A bachelor’s degree in history or government is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
- Virginia Licensure with an endorsement in social sciences is required.
- Knowledge of high school government and global studies curricula and pedagogy, and university-level curriculum and pedagogy is preferred.
- Virginia endorsement in gifted education preferred; will be expected to have or to complete the gifted endorsement within four years of hire.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Effectively organize and teach courses in high school government and global studies by established curricula.
- Evaluate and report student performance and progress.
- Maintain current course syllabi and provide a concomitant student guide for each course taught.
Curriculum Development:
Keeps current in subject matter knowledge and learning theory and is willing to share this knowledge for continual improvement of the school’s curriculum.
Assists in the ongoing curriculum process, including the revision of written courses of study.
Classroom Management:
Develops, by school guidelines, reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate techniques that are consistently applied.
Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
If applicable, submit for the director’s and/or his/her designee's approval requisitions for purchases of materials and equipment to support the program.
Provides for the supervision of assigned students when circumstances require a brief absence from the assignment.
Public Relations:
Upholds and enforces regional school board policy, administrative procedures, and school rules and regulations, and supports them to the public.
Maintains appropriate work habits, including regular and punctual attendance and appropriate use of conference and planning time.
Strives to communicate the positive aspects of our school program to the public in word and deed.
Works cooperatively with parents to strengthen the education program for their children.
Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with other staff members.
Professional Growth:
Continues professional growth through attendance at workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning.
Encourage membership in appropriate professional organizations.
Cooperates with the administration in planning appropriate in-service training programs at the school.
Attends staff, department, and committee meetings as required.
Student Evaluation:
Evaluates the accomplishments of students regularly using multiple assessment methods such as teacher-made tests, samples of students’ work,
mastery skills checklists, criterion-referenced tests, and norm-referenced tests.
Makes appropriate adjustments in the instructional program as required by the director and/or his/her designee.
Respect the confidentiality of records and information regarding students, parents, and teachers according to accepted professional ethics and state
and federal laws.
GENERAL PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES:
Position involves sitting and/or standing most of the time in a classroom setting; exerting up to 10 pounds occasionally. Occasional stooping, crouching, pushing, pulling, carrying, and repetitive motion. Frequent reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and grasping. Constant talking, hearing, and viewing various types of close visual work.
