Description
Governors State University is seeking to hire a Laboratory Manager who will be responsible for the coordination of laboratory equipment in the Biology Department of the Division of Science, Mathematics, and Technology. The Laboratory Manager works closely with the Senior Laboratory Manager, faculty members, and laboratory assistants in the department to manage and coordinate operational activities and maintain projects and facilities in teaching laboratories and faculty research, ensuring that experiments are set up and functioning properly and in accordance with safety rules and guidelines.
Essential Responsibilities
15% Processes orders of laboratory commodities and lab equipment for the biology teaching and research laboratories and the biological field station (including grant funded activities). Research items availability, costs, delivery timeline, storage requirements in compliance with required lab safety procedures.
15% Oversees the procuring process by creating requisitions, placing supply orders, coordinating deliveries, and monitoring incoming invoices and by working with the Procurement, Central Receiving, and Accounts Payable departments to ensure the timely delivery of laboratory commodities and equipment.
15% Support maintenance of laboratory commodities and equipment. Conduct periodic inventories and organize/restock items as necessary. Conduct weekly laboratory walkthroughs and coordinate with the Environmental Health and Safety department for disposal of laboratory hazardous waste materials.
15% Maintains safe and sanitary lab environments. Process laboratory safety forms and laboratory safety videos. Ensure that files and records are maintained in accordance with GovState policies and procedures, and with laboratory safety rules and guidelines.
15% Assist faculty in supervision of the activities of graduate laboratory assistants assigned to help teaching laboratory courses Orients graduate laboratory assistants to the methods and materials used in teaching each laboratory experiment or exercise.
15% Provides office and clerical services for the biology main office including (not all inclusive) routing visitors and phone calls, opening and distributing mail, scheduling meetings, resolving calendar issues, filing system upkeep, office supply ordering, preparing travel reimbursements, and making travel arrangements.
5% Attends and participates in meetings as required.
5% Coordinate and/or facilitate special projects and other duties as assigned. Provide support to the Senior Laboratory Manager.
Hourly Range: $22.94 - $26.38(This is a non-unionized position. Salary starts at the base and is determined based on Education and Experience exceeding the minimum qualifications).

Required and Preferred Qualifications
REQUIRED: COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY TRANSCRIPTS, WHICH INCLUDES THE EARNED DEGREE AND CONFERRED DATE MUST BE ATTACHED FOR CONSIDERATION OF THIS POSITION.
Minimum Qualifications:-
Bachelor’s degree in a scientific discipline closely related to the position
AND
two (2) years (24 months) of work experience in a laboratory or similar setting closely related to the position
OR
Total of five (5) years (60 months) of any combination of education in a scientific discipline and/or work experience in a laboratory or similar setting related to the position.

- One (1) year (12 months) of supervisory and/or administrative experience.
NOTE: A Master’s Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year (12 months) of work experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Master's degree in biology or closely related field.
- Two (2) years of supervisory and/or administrative experience.
