JOB TITLE: Billing Specialist DATE EFFECTIVE: 02.01.2025
POSITION SUMMARY
The Billing Specialist will be responsible for overseeing the front office charge entry and daily billing of all visits for all locations assigned. They will monitor and work all claims on hold and monitor corporate accounts and patient balances. They will address all issues identified by Athena including unpostable EOBs, zero pays, fully-worked claims, unapplieds, refunds, overpayments, and unmatched deposits. They will assist with the table maintenance of Athena. They will be responsible for assisting with decreasing the aging A/R and help in the preparation of reports and aging analysis for clients.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Review and work all claims that have been placed on hold from clearinghouse or denied/returned by payers.
- Address any unapplied payer payments to determine correct account/claim for payment.
- Reply to correspondence/ faxes from insurance companies including patient account adjustments, information requests or refund requests.
- Work patient unapplied payments, applying them to the correct claim or refunding as appropriate.
- Confirm appropriateness of refunds owed and process through accounting and practice management system.
- Electronically work accounts that have reached collections stage by adjusting the account, sending letters or sending to collections.
- Resolve issues from patients and insurance companies regarding claims that Athena was unable to address.
- Review accounts that have partial or under payments.
- Review accounts to determine if billed correctly.
- Assist in maintaining data tables in the practice management system.
- Assist other members of team as needed.

ESSENTIAL SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE Minimum of High School diploma or equivalent. Must have a minimum of two years of experience in medical outpatient billing on the AthenaOne or AthenaCollector platform.
