Field Geologist / Foundation Investigator

GPD Geotechnical Services is currently seeking a Field Geologist / Foundation Investigator in our Akron, Ohio office location to support the Geotechnical practice.
Are you looking for a career that gets you outdoors performing field site visits and mapping? As a Field Geologist / Foundation Investigator, you will travel from site to site collecting soil samples from field sites and performing mapping. You will also perform construction related testing verifying construction s being performed per plan and specification. This role is a key member of the geotechnical team of professionals who test and analyze soil samples to provide clients with geotechnical solutions.
Job Responsibilities:
- The work requires a practical knowledge of testing procedures and techniques based on engineering and geological principles and the skill to apply these procedures.
- Assist driller with handling augers, rods, and samplers weighting up to 50 pounds.
- Prepare drilling logs showing soil and bedrock classifications, stratification, and groundwater conditions.
- Drive heavy duty pickups and towing trailers under CDL weight
- Coordinating the collection and testing of materials for construction projects including aggregates, hot mix asphalt, soils, and concrete (will train)
- Interacting with a variety of people contributing to field projects: construction/engineers/architects/geologists
- Writing follow up reports on site work
- Travel to cell tower sites across the United States
- Evaluate the type and size of existing foundations using non-destructive testing methods
- Field work will include performing field classifications and sample preservation of soil and rock samples obtained during geotechnical drilling operations. Additional field opportunities will include testing soil, concrete, asphalt, and other materials at construction sites.
- Responsible for adherence to all safety rules and regulations.
Role Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Geology.
- Prior field experience is desired but not required.
- Ability to coordinate the collection and testing of materials for construction projects including aggregates, hot mix asphalt, soils, and concrete
- Ability to read engineering plans and/or specifications
- Ability to work toward an ACI/NICET certification
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information
- Willingness to travel five days a week including overnight stays; out-of state travel required
- Ability to coordinate airfare, lodging, rental car, site access, etc.
- Strong communication skills and self-motivated
- High level of attention to detail
- Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record that is acceptable to GPD Insurance requirements.
Physical Requirements
- Physically mobile in and around the laboratory, construction sites and field assignments.
- Ability to carry required instruments and equipment.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds.
- Ability to bend, stand and be on one’s feet for long periods of time.
- Field work requires the ability to navigate uneven and sloping terrain. The worker is subject to variable climate and environmental conditions including but not limited to cold and heat.
- Ability to work long hourse with 10 hours or more of overtime per week possible.
