Field Geologist
GPD Geotechnical Services serves clients across Ohio and in parts of Pennsylvania and West Virginia with a wide array of engineering and material testing services. GPD Geotechnical Services is a trusted provider of subsurface explorations, foundation analyses, geotechnical reports, soil testing, laboratory analyses, and much more.
GPD Geotechnical Services is currently seeking a Field Geologist in our Akron, Ohio office to travel to sites daily assisting geotechnical and environmental drilling operations and prepare field logs of the soil, bedrock, and groundwater conditions.
Job Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology.
- Prior field experience is desired by not required.
- Assist driller with handling augers, rods, and samplers weighting up to 50 pounds.
- Prepare drilling logs showing soil and bedrock classifications, stratification, and groundwater conditions.
- Drive heavy duty pickups and towing trailers under CDL weight
- Ability to work with minimal supervision, maintain confidentiality and manage sensitive information
- Strong communication skills and self-motivated
- High level of attention to detail
- Ability to multi-task
- Daily, local travel required
- Up to 50% out-of-town work required during the work week, typically home on weekends
- Valid Driver’s License and clean driving record acceptable to GPD Insurance requirements.
Responsibilities will include:
- Coordinating the collection and classification of soil and bedrock samples
- Interacting with a variety of people contributing to field drilling operations: construction/engineers/architects/geologists
- Preparing written field logs showing the soil and rock classifications and stratigraphy
- Daily, local travel required with up to 50% out of town travel
Physical Requirements
- Physically mobile in and around a diverse range of outside conditions.
- Ability to carry required instruments and equipment.
- Ability to lift 50 pounds repeatedly during the day.
- Ability to bend, stand and be on one’s feet for long periods of time.
- Ability to work long hours with 10 hours or more of overtime per week typical.
- Field work requires the ability to navigate uneven and sloping terrain. The worker is subject to variable climate and environmental conditions including but not limited to cold and heat.
