Description

The Dietary Custodian at Riverside Healthcare is responsible for performing a variety of custodial and sanitation duties within the food service department. This role ensures that all surfaces, equipment, and floors are properly cleaned, maintained, and meet regulatory sanitation standards. The Dietary Custodian plays a critical role in maintaining a safe and hygienic environment for food preparation and service by following specific cleaning protocols and schedules. Demonstrates flexibility with assignments within professional scope/duties/licensure.

Essential Duties

  • Clean and sanitize all surfaces within the food service department, including counters, walls, ceilings, and stainless-steel workstations.
  • Perform scheduled and as-needed maintenance of kitchen equipment such as deep fryers, including oil filtering, removal, and replenishment.
  • Sweep, scrub, and mop floors according to department standards, ensuring cleanliness of tile floors and floor mats.
  • Clean and maintain kitchen equipment on a rotating schedule, including but not limited to convection ovens, stovetops, char broilers, steam kettles, steam tables, warming ovens, pizza ovens, and exhaust hoods.
  • Polish all stainless steel surfaces to maintain cleanliness and hygiene standards.
  • Remove trash and recycling from the department and transport to designated disposal areas, ensuring proper handling of waste materials.
  • Clean and sanitize garbage carts and trash cans as needed, maintaining a strict sanitation schedule.
  • Operate independently to identify and address cleaning needs, define cleaning goals, and execute tasks efficiently without direct supervision.
  • Utilize cleaning chemicals safely in compliance with department protocols, ensuring proper usage and adherence to safety guidelines.
  • Properly use and maintain personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with department safety protocols.

Non-essential Duties

  • Perform special duties as assigned by supervisors or department heads, including deep-cleaning tasks or equipment maintenance that falls outside of the regular rotation.
  • Assist with additional custodial tasks during special events or peak operational periods.

Requirements

Preferred Experience

  • Previous experience in custodial or environmental services in a healthcare or food service setting is preferred but not required
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Strong attention to detail, especially regarding cleanliness and sanitation standards.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, displaying initiative in identifying and addressing cleaning needs.
  • Basic problem-solving skills to handle minor issues or challenges in the absence of a supervisor.
  • Familiarity with the safe handling of cleaning chemicals and sanitation equipment.
  • Physical stamina to perform tasks such as lifting, scrubbing, and standing for extended periods

  • Speech: Must be able to communicate effectively with all staff, particularly when working independently.
  • Vision: Needed to see printed directions and to evaluate cleaning needs.
  • Smell: Helpful to note presence of electrical/fire hazard.
  • Hearing: Must be able to hear overhead pages or other staff in the event of an emergency.
  • Touch: Needed to handle supplies, equipment, etc., without dropping. Exposure to wet and slippery surfaces.
