What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wound Care Nurse position at Grand River Health?
BASIC FUNCTION: The certified wound nurse (CWN) will be responsible to apply the nursing process in care of patients with acute and chronic wounds, fistulas, pressure ulcers and other states of impaired skin integrity. The CWN will provide consultation for prevention and treatment of patients with wounds for physicians/practitioners, nursing staff, patients and families in acute care, skilled/long term care, and outpatient services. The CWN will provide staff education in wound care prevention and management. CWN will demonstrate leadership in collaborating with other interdisciplinary team members as well as provide current evidence based best practices for wound care.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing with current RN license with state of Colorado BON. Must possess and maintain a current Wound Care Certification. Provide competency for performing conservative sharp debridement. Must maintain a current BLS.
- Experience: Minimum 2 years experience working in a wound care environment such as wound clinic, long term care, or acute care.
- Knowledge, skills and abilities: RN must have working knowledge of general RN skills.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Direct patient care- The CWN must have comprehensive knowledge of wound assessment, documentation, wound healing processes and current standards of wound care practice in order to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate appropriate wound care treatments. Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care. Knowledge of safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment
- Consultation- The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff, interdisciplinary team and the public. Provide resources related to wound care and other skin integrity issues. Assist in developing and implementing protocols used in prevention and management of patients with wound care needs. Collaborate with other interdisciplinary staff in planning and implementing wound care prevention and treatment.
- Staff Education- The CWN will provide staff education relating to best practices for wound prevention and treatments. Update staff on policies and procedures related to wound care practices.
- Leadership/Management- The CWN will maintain certification through continuing education programs. Assist in interdisciplinary team meetings as needed. Work with materials management to analyze wound products to assure quality and cost-effective strategies of products used for skin and wound care. Knowledge of organization policies, regulations and procedures to administer routine nursing care. Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and written. Must be proficient within 6 months of hire in current electronic health records use. Excellent interpersonal skills required.
- Research- The CWN will utilize current research in maintaining wound care policies, procedures and protocols. Collaborate with quality improvement to identify, develop, implement and evaluate programs related to wound care prevention and treatment issues as needed.
SALARY INFORMATION:
- $30.50 - $48.85 Dependent on Experience
