POSITION SUMMARY: The Agriculture Education Teacher & Industrial Arts Instructor is responsible for developing and implementing a high-quality agriculture and shop program at Grand Valley High School. This position will introduce students to agricultural science, mechanics, woodworking, and construction-related skills, while incorporating hands-on learning opportunities in a classroom, lab, and shop setting. The instructor will establish and support a new FFA chapter, collaborate with local industry partners, and engage students in career and technical education (CTE) pathways.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Instruction & Curriculum Development
•Develop and teach a comprehensive agriculture and industrial arts curriculum, including but not limited to animal science, plant science, agricultural mechanics, woodworking, welding, and small engines.
•Create hands-on learning opportunities in a lab/shop setting that align with CTE standards and industry best practices.
•Integrate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) principles into coursework to enhance student learning and career readiness.
•Provide a safe and structured learning environment, ensuring proper use of tools, equipment, and machinery.
•Assess student progress using a variety of formative and summative assessments.
FFA Program & Student Leadership
•Establish and lead a new FFA (Future Farmers of America) chapter, encouraging student participation in leadership development, career-based competitions, and community service.
•Guide students in preparing for FFA contests, supervised agricultural experiences (SAEs), and state/national conventions.
•Foster partnerships with local agricultural businesses and community members to support student learning and career opportunities.
Shop & Program Management
•Oversee and maintain the agriculture lab, greenhouse, woodshop, and/or welding equipment, ensuring safety protocols are followed.
•Manage classroom and shop inventory, ordering necessary materials and supplies.
•Coordinate school-based projects, such as garden plots, greenhouse production, or small construction builds.
•Implement proper shop safety procedures and provide training on equipment operation.
Career & Technical Education (CTE) & Community Engagement
•Develop industry connections and bring in guest speakers, field trips, and work-based learning opportunities.
•Assist students in identifying post-secondary pathways in agriculture, trade industries, or technical careers.
•Collaborate with local industry professionals and advisory committees to enhance program offerings.
•Organize events to showcase student projects and achievements to parents, industry partners, and the school community.
QUALIFICATIONS
•Education & Certification:
oBachelor’s degree in Agricultural Education, Industrial Arts, Career & Technical Education, or a related field.
oHold or be eligible for a Colorado CTE Teaching License (or willingness to obtain certification).
oOSHA safety certification or willingness to complete upon hiring (preferred).
•Experience:
oTeaching experience at the secondary level (preferred).
oExperience in agricultural education, mechanics, woodworking, welding, or construction trades.
oBackground in FFA leadership, CTE programs, or hands-on learning environments (preferred).
•Skills & Abilities:
oStrong instructional, organizational, and classroom management skills.
oAbility to work collaboratively with students, staff, parents, and the local community.
oEffective communication and leadership skills.
oCommitment to student growth and career readiness.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
•10-month position (follows the school calendar).
•May require occasional evening and weekend duties for FFA events, competitions, or school functions.
•Salary and benefits per district policy and negotiated agreement.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
•Physical ability to work in classroom, lab, and shop settings.
•Supervision of students operating tools, machinery, and agricultural equipment.
•Occasional exposure to outdoor elements when working in greenhouse or agriculture projects.
