SUMMARY: The Grounds employee is responsible for maintenance, upkeep, and appearance of the school districts’ entire grounds.
The Grounds employee will ensure safety of students, employees, members of the community, and visitors on school property by safe operation of equipment and adherence to safety rules and regulations.

- High school diploma or general education degree (GED). Preference will be given to individuals who have previous commercial or school grounds experience, along with experience plowing snow.
- Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organizations.
- A candidate for the position of Grounds Person must have demonstrated that he/she is mentally alert, ambitious and capable of doing work assigned. He/she must be able to organize his/her work and develop an efficient plan for doing it. His/her character, honesty, and integrity should be above reproach.
- The candidate should continuously present a neat appearance, be well groomed with clean district issued clothing.
- The Grounds employee must relate well with others. He/she must have demonstrated the ability to get along well with co-workers, contacts, and superiors, and be able to meet others in a friendly, helpful manner. He/she should see himself/herself as one who makes a better educational program possible for children because he/she recognizes that well kept grounds provides a cheerful and healthful environment for students, teachers, and community.
- Ability to add, subtract, and multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
- Must have the ability and knowledge to communicate via Groupwise, email and phone mail.
- Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Ability to pass a written and physical test. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. He/she must pass: (a) a physical examination by a medical doctor, (b) a police clearance, and (c) a reference check as required. Candidates with experience in the operation of a multi geared tractor, dump truck, and commercial lawn mowers are preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers to handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit. The employee frequently must squat, stoop or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. The employee frequently uses hand strength to grasp tools and climb ladders. The employee will frequently bend or twist at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing the duties of this job. Must be able to work at heights of 45 feet using power lifts.
The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails and unloading trucks. Occasionally the employee will lift and/or move up to 90 lb. such as salt and bulk furniture. The employee will sometimes push/pull items such as tables, bleachers, scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works outdoors and will occasionally work indoors. The employee will work near or with moving mechanical equipment. The employee may work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays while performing the duties of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Hearing protection should be worn when using power equipment.
RESPONSIBILITIES (other duties as assigned):
- Cut, fertilize, and water lawns throughout the school district.
- Remove paper, rubbish, stones, and foreign matter as directed.
- Line athletic areas, football field, track areas, tennis courts, and baseball diamonds.
- Work on sidewalks and parking areas, such as removing weeds from walk edges, from fence rows, and from curbs and trimming bushes.
- Be able to repair and maintain automatic irrigation systems as directed.
- Keep wood chips or other material around and under playground equipment to comply with safety regulations, and maintain all fencing and keep all playground equipment in safe condition.
- Help keep snow and ice off all sidewalks not adjacent to buildings.
- The grounds persons are responsible for the safe operation of their equipment. Also, they are responsible for keeping the equipment clean and in good working condition. They are to check the oil regularly in power equipment, change oil and lube when manuals specify.
- Because of the different seasons of ground care, there will be slack times in work schedules. When the weather does not permit outside work, the grounds person will work in other fields, such as truck driving and deliveries, repair and refinish furniture, be a helper to the maintenance staff, and at anytime it may be necessary to work as a substitute custodian.
- Any other specific and general duties needed to effectively fulfill his/her areas of responsibility and/or as assigned to him/her from time to time by the Foreman, Director of Building Operations or their designee.
